With the arrival of a new Interim Dean, he asked, why the canons at our church, St. Andrew's Cathedral, Jackson, Mississippi were wearing black cassocks.
In good Episcopalian fashion (pun intended) the answer was, because they always have!!

After some research, several people found that other Cathedrals, Canon's also wear, Black Cassocks with piping in a "blue" purple.
We are also finding that Bishop's Canon's sometimes wear black cassocks with "red" purple piping.

What help can you give me from around the church for the color of the clergy cassocks in your Cathedrals??

(By the way the our vergers have worn "blue" Purple cassocks for years.)

A wild guess on why not purple would be previous deans may have not wanted to task new clergy with the onus of buying a cassock that may cost a lot and not be needed in the future.

I went to a high school that was designated as a dioscesan school and we did use purple cassocks for servers and the clergy

Margaret,

The clergy at Christ Church Cathedral wear black cassocks with a magenta piping.  William White will know for sure.

I've visited cathedrals on both coasts and we are right in the middle - Topeka, KS. What I noticed may not help much, but....  In San Francisco everyone wore a purple cassock. By that I mean all vested people, both lay and ordained. In New York everyone wore a black cassock. In Topeka, the clergy wear black and lay ministers wear purple. At that point the SFCA purples were a bit redder than what we use in Topeka, which varies some based on suppliers I bet. There was no piping trim happening then.

At The Cathedral of All Saints all canons wear black cassocks and all lay servers, including the men and boys of the choir wear purple.
