[Important Update] Objections on the Draft EIA Notification 2020 sent to MoEFCC

This is to update that VENHF has submitted a detailed objection on the Draft EIA Notification 2020 for which comments were invited from the public. Please find the submission attached in the PDF document.

The Draft EIA Notification, 2020 significantly dilutes the provisions of the EIA Notification, 2006. It introduces substantial changes which are contrary to the parent legislation - the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 - and various other rules and regulations. This goes against the constitutional mandate of the state to protect the environment under the Public Trust Doctrine, and the standards set out in international conventions including the Rio declaration (1992) and Paris Agreement, 2015. While the stated purpose of the notification is the improvement of the environmental clearance process, this is done through diluting fundamental and crucial safeguards. It not only ignores the Precautionary Principle but also violates the principles of natural justice and fundamental right to life guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution.

An important update:

We just came to know that MoEFCC has republished the Draft EIA Notification 2020 as a gazette notification on 23 May, 2020. So, the 60 days for public comments shall be 21st May. Pl find attached the gazette notification.

Hello all,

Tomorrow is the last date to submit comments on the Draft EIA Notification, 2020. In April, VENHF has sent a very detailed submission to the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change which has been used by many concerned citizens to make their own submission.
