vim goes into insert mode if digits entered too quickly

If I copy and paste 88888 into command mode, with the intent of manually
adding a "G" (to go to line 8888), vim switches into insert mode and
puts the 88888 into the file.  How can I inhibit that?

I think this may be caused by xterm bracketed paste mode. You may want
to consider to disable this feature, see :h xterm-bracketed-paste
