Tuesday October 14, 2025 Hike

Greetings,

I’m getting this announcement out early, since I’m leaving for PA on Friday.  I plan to scout the hike on Monday afternoon and spend the night at Pine Grove Furnace.  Hopefully, I’ll have cell phone reception and internet access to coordinate with you.

* Pennsylvania Pine Grove Furnace - Mt Holly Marsh Preserve Loop*  Starting in the Pine Grove Furnace State Park Visitor Center parking lot (40.03285,-77.30475) at 9:00 am, we will head northeast on the Buck Ridge, Hammonds Rock, and Ridge Trails to access the Mt Holly Marsh trail system.  We will then follow the AT back to Pine Grove Furnace; about 18 miles with 3000 feet of ascent.  See the attached map excerpted from Lizard Michaux State Forest Map.  The day's activities may also include a stop at Hollabaugh Brothers Orchard in Biglerville, PA for Nittany apples and cider.

TO CARPOOL: Meet no later than 7:00 am in the first parking lot at Carderock Recreation Area (38.9723,-77.1996).  Exit the beltway for Clara Barton Parkway West (towards Potomac), in less than a mile exit and follow signs into Carderock Rec Area (for the first parking area turn right and then an immediate left).

Let me know if you will be meeting me at Pine Grove Furnace at 9:00 am or Carderock at 7:00 am.
