This story popped up on a blog about one particular M3A1 "Grease Gun", a .45 caliber submachine gun from WW2 which continued through Korea and into South Vietnam, mostly to ARVN troops.  I first met this stamped-metal -- America's answer to the British Sten gun -- in my civilian adviser days down in the Delta from mid-64 and, boy, what a kicker this was just like in all those old war movies.

While the Grease Gun was not issued to US troops, that didn't stop a band of US Marine film & photographer types from "liberating" one during the Battle of Hue and making it their own -- and in the telling, its appearance in Full Metal Jacket.

Best regards,

Carl

I found an M3 in my closet when I rented an apartment on Phan Than Gian street.  The word was that once it started firing, it was hard to stop. I dumped it and several magazines into the river.

To All,

"While the Grease Gun was not issued to US troops," The attached photo, Pineapple Still Life with Soldiers, says otherwise. Taken at LZ Goat (aka FSB Young) in June 1968 you may also see a pineapple which was also said to not have been issued to us in that particular war.

While an M48A3 tank had its cannon and two machine guns it also had an M79 grenade launcher (the Blooper) and two grease guns assigned. One shot bullets and the other shot grease.

And yes, the soldier in the background scratching behind his ear with his .45 has his finger on the trigger, yes the hammer is pulled back, yes the safety is off, and yes there is a round in the chamber. Baby Eady did make it safely home to Indiana two months later.

The soldier in the foreground (me) never did fire that weapon at any enemies of the United States. I just drove the tank. Gunner Guzik did all the killing.

Years later I did have the thrill of nailing an NVA with a 500mm recoilless Nikon. He never knew what hit him. The very next day some other NVA nailed me with an 82mm. So it goes.
