When I download the Companion App, this is what I get: Checking companion app returned: Access to the specified native messaging host is forbidden.

I too am now not able to use VDH I have bought two licences for Edge and one for Chrome.  I require VDH for study.

Please could the DEVs resolve this issue as a priority as my installation is not able to validate the licence for which I have paid.  If you cannot resolve it, would it be possible for me to get a refund on both Edge licences as this app is no longer of any use to me due to changes that have been made, or faults in the code, which are entirely out of my control.

I hope you will respond promptly.  Please also note that the accounts are not registered to my gmail address but to paul....@assured.me.uk

Regards,

Paul Wyatt

Many thanks for reporting the problem.

We are aware of a very recent issue with the Edge browser that makes the Video DownloadHelper extension unable to access its Companion app, and as a consequence, most cool features are simply not available.

The error log shows:

Checking companion app returned: Access to the specified native messaging host is forbidden

As of now, we can tell that since we did not update the extension (7.3.8.0) nor the companion app (1.6.0), the issue is with an Edge update. And this is no good news since we may not be able to provide a quick fix. We will keep you up to date in this topic.

Regarding the VDH extension version, note that we (re)submitted a few days ago a new version 7.4.0.0 to Edge add-ons team for review. This is not the cause of the problem because at this time, the new version has not been reviewed yet (but it should be in the next few hours/days) and users are reporting the problem with VDH 7.3.8.0. Version 7.4.0.0 is also unlikely to fix anything regarding the current problem.

Stay tuned,
/mig

Great news that you're on it.  Thank you too for helping me realise that I possess a solution for my own problem - reinstall Chrome and use VDH Chrome licence.  This will, I hope, be a temporary fix and that I will be able to fully return to my Edge environment soon.

Thank you for your excellent product and for getting on to this matter so promptly.  I hope you can resolve it soon.

Kindest regards,
Paul

I would like to come back to you and tell you how fast and efficient the Edge add-on team was at fixing the problem they created by blocking by mistake our extension this week-end (they only blocked access to the companion app, but in this case then entire extension is almost unusable), but the truth is that it's not going well.
At this point, the problem has very certainly be identified and is due to a mistake from the Edge add-on team. They are a bunch of people at microsoft involved into the resolution but mostly managers and it looks like the tech guy who is supposed to push the button to actually fix the problem is either homesick or on his way to another job.
They stopped communicating so i cannot tell you when the issue will be solved even if 2 days ago i would have say "it's certainly a matter of hours".
Having worked closely for 15 years with Firefox add-ons team and for 5 years with the Chrome team, i can tell that such a situation that blocks over 100,000 users would not happen or at least there will be a reason that would be communicated.
Let's hope that the organisational issue the Microsoft Edge team is facing will improve in the future and they will tend to what we have on other more mature browsers like Firefox and Chrome.

Without a due date for getting a resolution for our problem, we can generate VDH/Firefox licenses for those who have a VDH/Edge license. Obviously it means using Firefox instead of Edge, but given the lack of maturity of Edge and the slow pace at which it improves, this is for the better.

Just send me in private the license key you have on Edge.

Just received a message from Microsoft add-ons team. They estimate to 24 hours the delay to resolve the issue.
Thank you all for your patience.

We are approaching a resolution of the problem thanks to some Edge engineers at Microsoft.

The workaround will require installing a new version of the Coapp.

Finally we have a fix ! It is implemented in a new version of the coapp 1.6.1. For Windows, you can download and install the coapp from https://github.com/mi-g/vdhcoapp/releases/download/v1.6.1/VdhCoAppSetup-1.6.1.exe

As a consequence, the free VDH/Firefox license deal does not stand any more.

A new version 7.5.0.4 of the extension is in review at Edge. It makes sure the user is notified to run coapp v1.6.1 in case a former version is installed.
