I find that I am slowly converting quite a few of my machines to 3 phase motors with VFD's.  A little while ago it struck me that there must be some kind of a device that allows one VFD to power more than one machine.  I was hoping for some kind of a VFD power bar.  There may be one, but I couldn't find it.  Anyway I stumbled on a changeover switch that looked promising.

It arrived on Saturday and yesterday I hooked it up.  Of course there were no instructions, so I had to discover how to make it work.  It turns out that it needed 3 jumpers to deliver current to both sides of the switch.  Turning the knob completed the circuit on one side or the other.  The middle (0) position is off for both.

It works like a charm, running either my drill press or my little bandsaw with one VFD.

The cost was just over $21, about $100 less that another VFD.

Thought I would share this in case anyone else is contemplating the same.  Or maybe someone knows of a better way.

Interesting idea,
I think this is completely viable so long as the motors have the same power profiles. Otherwise I think one of the two motors is going to operate on less than ideal power from the VFD.

Both motors are 1/2 HP and the VFD is rated to 2.2 kwt so there shouldn't be an issue.  The motor for the bandsaw has a built in speed reducer and I actually had to up the maximum frequency to 100 htz to get the speed range that I was looking for.  Surprisingly, the torque for the drill press is still more than adequate.
