Woohoo! Anything would be better than Metal Supermarket.

I'm glad to hear there's another vendor who will sell metal in small quantities. Their website seems somewhat abbreviated, so I guess you just contact them and tell a real person what you're looking for.

I may give them a visit today for some stock.
I will report back on my experience & their pricing.

Hi Everyone,

I thought I'd post to this old thread because it seems relevant.

Can anyone suggest a good local vendor for machinable cast iron? Maybe even continuous cast iron? I'm thinking of trying to make a new cross slide or compound slide and I'm looking for a material that can be machined and scraped and is suitable for dovetail parts that slide. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Ian

I've looked long and hard a couple of years ago but couldn't find anything even remotely local. Ended up ordering from MacMaster, very expensive.

Thanks Alex. What about getting an ingot from a local foundry? Or maybe a simple custom-cast rectangular piece? Do you think that would be more expensive than MacMaster?

Regards,
Ian

I'd think so. There is a small foundry somewhere up the island (Parksville ?), I guess it wouldn't hurt to ask. I've heard of someone who got miniature bronze cannons cast there, so maybe it is possible... Please let us know if you do call them.

There's also a foundry in Langford, in the old industrial sector off Jacklin Road.

Hey guys, I visited the Thompson Foundry in Vancouver (https://www.thompsonfoundry.com) and told them I needed some cast material to rebuild a cross-slide for my Myford .. coincidentally I've never actually completed let alone started that project but they gave me over 70lbs of spigot material from their Ductile 65 cast left-overs for FREE! Mike gave me a tour of the entire foundry including pattern making areas and prep, pour and post ops .. it was incredible .. super kind people and yes, tons and literally tons of cast iron up for grabs .. ... in contrast, I talked to a machine shop somewhere near keating, they were going to charge me 250$ for a 8x1.5in round ..

I would highly recommend contacting Mike at the Thompson Foundry ... you can't go wrong .. I know, it's across the pond .. trust me, worth the trip ..

Thanks for your thoughts everyone. I spoke with Paul at Smith Bros and he said there are no more iron foundries left on the island. Apparently, the last one was next door to Smith Bros, but they closed in the '90s. Looks like I'll have to plan a visit to Thompson Foundry at some point.

I'm afraid I haven't done so yet Mat, but I'd like to.

In my world, "at some point" could be a lot longer than a few months. Ironically, I visit Vancouver 3 times per month for work, but my schedule isn't flexible and I take transit so it's not easy for me to make the detour to Thompson Foundry.

My cross slide idea is on the back burner at the moment and if/when I get to it, I'll probably try to find a suitable piece of scrap from the island first.
