To the VICAR community:

I’m brand new to learning about VICAR, having only recently learned that it can now be run on a Macintosh.  At the same time I’m working on learning the basics of UNIX, at least to the extent that I can get VICAR running, but I’m having trouble with setting the environment to run VICAR on my Mac OS 10:  I can’t get my computer to understand V2TOP any better than I do.

 My first question is how to clarify the line

 “cd $V2TOP”

in the Build Instructions?  If I use the command setenv it will declare the name and whatever I’m saying it equals, which is a directory, but then it won’t recognize it.  “Adjust V2TOP as needed” is a loaded statement….it would be nice simply to cd  to the folder and then tell V2TOP to go to the pwd, but that doesn’t work.

I downloaded the package and the externals, and everything referred to by the documentation is there - how do I point $V2TOP to the …/vos directory (in PWD below)?

PATH=/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/opt/X11/bin

PWD=/Users/user/desktop/vicariousrrlocal/nasa-vicar-539ed07/vos

LANG=en_US.UTF-8

Aside from the obvious “switch to Photoshop,” are there any suggestions from users out there who have gotten VICAR running on a similar Mac?  I’m sure it’s a relatively simple answer…

Cheers!

Hi John,

I’m assuming you have XQuartz installed (X-Windows server for the Mac). When I start an xterm window in XQuartz, I’m dropped into a bash shell. You’ll want to switch to tcsh (an enhanced csh) by typing the “tcsh” command. Then setenv should be defined for you. Then…

setenv V2TOP /Users/user/desktop/vicariousrrlocal/nasa-vicar-539ed07/vos

should do what you’re asking. When you then source vicset1.csh and vicset2.csh, it will complain about your V2TOP having upper case characters (“Users”). You could fix that with a soft link, or just ignore it. It should work anyway.
