‘I’m ready to fight’ – Wife of broadcaster Gareth O’Callaghan says after cancer diagnosis

Broadcaster Gareth O’Callaghan’s wife, Paula, has revealed she was diagnosed with cancer.

Paula O’Callaghan, who is a singer from Cork, said on social media yesterday evening that she was diagnosed with leukaemia.

The wife of the famous radio presenter added she’s “ready to fight” and “grateful” for the support from her husband and family.

"I’ve recently received a diagnosis of leukaemia,” she wrote in a post on X. "While it's a lot to process, I'm ready to fight and learn more about this journey.”

“I am so grateful for the love and support of my husband, Gareth O’Callaghan, and my family,” she added.

The couple met in March 2015 and married in the Cork Registry Office in September 2020.

The radio presenter and DJ, Gareth O’Callaghan (64), currently hosts Gareth O’Callaghan At The Weekend on Saturdays on Ireland’s Classic Hits Radio.

The former RTÉ broadcaster, who has three children from his first marriage – Aibhín, Kerrie and Katie – was diagnosed with terminal illness, multiple system atrophy, in 2018.

The Dubliner, who now lives in Cork with his wife, has previously said of his wife: “To say that I love her feels almost like an understatement."

"It deserves a louder voice because, while the space I inhabit in life slowly grows smaller, Paula has prevented my heart from breaking and from growing tired and joyless.

"I can honestly say, hand on my heart, she saved my life,” he added at the time.

Due to his diagnosis, he had retired from his full-time radio career in Classic Hits Radio that same year to focus on his health.

However, he decided to return to hosting his weekend show in 2022.

Speaking about the day the couple met, Mr O’Callaghan previously told the Irish Independent: “I knew in my heart that evening that I would spend the rest of my life with her.”

“When we met eight years ago, neither of us had a clue what lay ahead. By the time we married, we both knew only too well what was happening to my health and the difficult road that lies ahead of us,” he added.
