Dear collegues,

In Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS, VESTA in all versions goes off when we try to select some atom of bond.

Does somebody knows how to solve this problem?

I have installed Cairo and libpng12, but did not work.

Thanks.

Dear Guedes,

Is there a possibility this comes from Ubuntu 22 itself?
I have been facing several issues with this OS version, not specifically with VESTA, but with different video-related problems (2nd monitor, etc) and even other visualization software like VESTA as well (for example ASE and XCrysDen).
Finally, I have decided to downgrade back to Ubuntu 20.04, at least for now.

Best regards,

Hey Lanna. Thanks for reply.

Yes, It's possible. However, It'is quite weird at the same time since I have tried dozens Vesta's version. No sucess.
Since Ubuntu 22 it is a long time support, I suppose not consider to downgrade. I have tried to solve that by several ways.

In addition, I think that Vesta developers should be in attention to this kind of problem because I'm not the unique facing this problem.

That's too bad.

Let me jump in with a "me too" here. Selecting atoms kills VESTA-gui on the spot on a LINUX Mint install 21.1 (Ubuntu 22.04 based). It's a seg-fault in libllvm:

kernel: VESTA-gui[6927]: segfault at 41 ip 00007f0852ac7381 sp 00007ffec3814e60 error 4 in libLLVM-15.so.1[7f085100e000+6712000]

Any help from the devs on this? Would an older/different version of llvm help?

Would you please try the latest development version?

Thanks for the reply! The testing version still crashes:

VESTA-gui[4973]: segfault at 41 ip 00007f78f2ac7381 sp 00007fff03b52f50 error 4 in libLLVM-15.so.1[7f78f100e000+6712000]

btw: on the same machine VESTA also dies the same way when running the windows version via wine (for which I have openGL enabled) but if I log in via SSH from a WSL-Terminal with X-forward  it works. So the problem appears to be graphics/openGL related. And just in case this helps:

another update: VESTA works (with relatively poor performance) when used with software rendering via LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1

Greetings

I made an icon for VESTA on the Desktop with the following information, and it works for me. I can select atoms and measure distances without problems, I hope it is useful for someone, I use Linux Mint 22.0.

[Desktop Entry]
Name=VESTAgtk2
Exec=/usr/bin/env LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 /home/martin/VESTA/VESTA
Comment=Structures
Terminal=false
PrefersNonDefaultGPU=false
Icon=/home/martin/VESTA-gtk2/img/logo.png
Type=Application

From the terminal the command would be: /usr/bin/env LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 /home/martin/VESTA/VESTA
