Dear Teachers and School Administrators,

I am writing to share a summer learning opportunity that may be of interest to your students who will be entering Grades 5–8 in Fall 2026.

The Vermont Entomology Academy is offering openings in its Youth Bug Huggers Adventure Camp, a hands-on, science-rich day camp focused on insects, field biology, and ecological discovery. The camp will be held during the last week of June, June 22–26, 2026, at Saint Michael’s College in Colchester.

This immersive program is designed for curious students who enjoy learning outdoors, asking questions, and exploring the natural world through direct observation and experimentation.

Camp Details
Dates: June 22–26, 2026
Hours: 9:00 AM–3:00 PM
(Drop-off: 8:30–9:00 • Pick-up: 3:00–3:30)
Location: Cheray Hall, Department of Biology, Saint Michael’s College

Instructional Team

  • Dr. Declan McCabe, Professor of Biology, Saint Michael’s College (Lead Instructor)

  • Cole Logan, museum scientist and wildlife conservationist

  • Two college interns

  • Bernie Paquette, Vermont Entomology Academy

  • A visiting Vermont-based scientist

Program Highlights

  • Field work: Insect observation and collecting on the Saint Michael’s College campus and at Gilbrook Pond

  • Indoor activities: Entomology lessons, hands-on lab work, specimen observation, and inquiry-based learning

  • Emphasis on scientific thinking, ecological literacy, and respectful interaction with living organisms

Eligibility & Cost

  • Open to students entering Grades 5–8

  • Maximum enrollment: 15 students

  • Cost: $280 per student (includes daily lunch at 11:00 AM)

  • Full scholarships available

Scholarships and sponsorships are supported by private donors and Bee the Change, a Vermont-based nonprofit dedicated to creating vital pollinator habitat.

We encourage educators and administrators to share this opportunity with students who may benefit from experiential science learning or who show interest in biology, environmental studies, or outdoor exploration.
