Newbie Question: Using Vault with Packer on Atlas

I would like to run packer builds in atlas. 

Where should I configure my atlas server? On my Windows 8.1 laptop?

Hi Liora,

Could you please explain a bit more what you mean? You configure the Atlas endpoint and configuration in your Packer template, but that has nothing to do with Vault. We (HashiCorp) run Vault along side Atlas and automatically encrypt secret information.

Could you walk me through how to set secret information in Vault and encrypt it in a Packer template run in Atlas?

The documentation is unclear for this use case.

Hi Liora,

That's not something that is currently supported in Packer; only in Atlas. You use Packer as you normally would, but when you run `packer push`, Atlas extracts the "variables" information and securely stores it in Vault automatically.

You do not need to do anything special :).

Do I place the variables values in the template variables section or define them in the variables section in Atlas?

We usually recommend using environment variables for the variables {{env `MY_VAR`}} and then setting that in Atlas.
