We are about to embark on our Aria installation and one thing Varian continues to question me on is Clinical Consulting for Radiation Oncology. I did not include it in the purchase as we have several individuals willing to put in the work and are quite capable (I think) of doing this work. However, I am being beaten up at every turn by Varian on this. It is quite a big chunk of change, but I wanted to ask is there a serious concern of not having this in our process?

I have never heard of the Clinical Consulting option.  What does it do?

Supposedly, it is a package that provides on-site consulting services whereby Varian sends in a group of individuals to review your department workflow and processes and to assist with putting those pieces into Aria.

In my opinion, the value of that service will be proportional to how paperless your operation is now configured.  If you are now entirely paperless with MOSAIQ then it would help expedite the conversion to ARIA.  But if you are largely paper driven, then I would say you don't need it initially to just get the treatment delivery and scheduling pieces going.  From there, you can take it step-by-step to add documents, encounters, care paths, etc.

I believe Varian sees it as just the opposite, Scott. Facilities moving from MOSAIQ to Aria and are not paperless need their consulting services.

I would just like to see some sort of cost-benefit analysis from someone who has used their services previously. Along these lines, did they provide a meaningful service that you couldn’t have done yourself. So far I haven’t seen or heard anything to that effect.

When I was in Napa, Elekta tried to sell us a similar service when we did a major MOSAIQ upgrade with the intention to go paperless.  The problem with these consultants is they try to make you conform to their model.  We chose to not get the service and instead do it on our own.  To help us, we bought ten extra days of application specialist visits which we used over a six month period.  We would get a two day visit every six weeks or so to help us implement what we decided we wanted to do.

Oh my. I am very scared. That is exactly what I thought and did. I can't start thinking and acting like Scott Dube. What will people think of me? 😜
