   Another weekend with a solar storm during a contest. Poor conditions for sure.

    Single Operator, High Power, No Assistance. N1MM, MMTTY, 2 instances of 2Tone.

    TS-2000X, KPA-500 at 300-450 watts to a TA-33 at 20', a 17' tall Inverted L.

    6 hours 21 minutes.

 Listened for signals on 80 but heard nothing.

 Worked N5SMQ on 10, 15, and 20. Worked W4PJW on 20 and 40.
  Made several contacts with South American stations.

  Never heard/saw Australia, New Zealand, Japan, etc.

On Contest Online Scoreboard:

SO HP:  AD4TJ was 29th of 66 stations.

SO LP:  W4PJW was 46th of 90 stations.

SO LP:  N5SMQ was 58th of 90 stations.

RTTY is a neat mode.  David AD4TJ, Butch N5SMQ and probably other locals I didn't recognize, had a good time this past weekend trying to dig signals out of the noise.  My first RTTY station was back when the Commodore 64 was first introduced.  The Commodore 64 had a special plug-in box for RTTY.  It's been a mode I have enjoyed for nearly 50 years.

The real challenge running RTTY is having a good station, good decoders and Time.  The challenge is getting it all set up and then concentrating on being efficient.  I use 4 different decoders to copy RTTY with different algorithms.  I don't pretend to understand any of how that all works.  I just know that many times only one of the decoders will get it right.

For this RTTY contest I operated only 5 hrs. 52 min. of the allotted 24 hours.  I have a hard time staying awake late at night and band conditions were just getting good as darkness approached.  Single Operator, Low Power, No Assistance, N1MM, MMTTY, 2 instances of 2Tone and one Gritty - 4 simultaneous decoders.  

The radio was my old Icom Pro3 at 100 watts and the antenna was an Extended Double Zepp.  One note of caution - RTTY is a 100% duty cycle mode.  Check your radio's duty cycle capability - most are rated at 50% when operating RTTY. 

The highlight of the contest was working HZ1TT in Saudi Arabia with my paltry 100 watts and a wire antenna.  I have HZ confirmed on 4 bands and 4 modes - but this is my first time working Saudi Arabia on RTTY on any band.

I have to agree with Jeff. When we lived in WV, I too ran RTTY with my C-64 and the RTTY plugin, hooked up to my KNWD TS-430S. Those were fun times.

Hi All!!

I didn't get to put in

the time I had hoped PLUS the bands were terrible!!! But I had fun in the time ! did operate.

I operated about 2hrs total. I worked AD4TJ on 3 bands 10, 15, 20... I heard W4PJW on 10m I think, but not well enough to work him.

I may play a bit in the IG RY WW RTTY coming this weekend as well. I've been working on wy FSK keyer and want to give it a good test out!
