to Vagrant
I'm running Mac OS 10.11.1

Here's what I get when I run vagrant up:
Bringing machine 'default' up with 'virtualbox' provider...
==> default: Checking if box 'ubuntu/trusty64' is up to date...
==> default: A newer version of the box 'ubuntu/trusty64' is available! You currently
==> default: have version '20160120.0.1'. The latest is version '20160122.0.0'. Run
==> default: `vagrant box update` to update.
==> default: Clearing any previously set network interfaces...
There was an error while executing `VBoxManage`, a CLI used by Vagrant
for controlling VirtualBox. The command and stderr is shown below.

Command: ["hostonlyif", "create"]

Stderr: 0%...
Progress state: NS_ERROR_FAILURE
VBoxManage: error: Failed to create the host-only adapter
VBoxManage: error: VBoxNetAdpCtl: Error while adding new interface: failed to open /dev/vboxnetctl: No such file or directory
VBoxManage: error: Details: code NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005), component HostNetworkInterface, interface IHostNetworkInterface
VBoxManage: error: Context: "int handleCreate(HandlerArg*, int, int*)" at line 66 of file VBoxManageHostonly.cpp

I tried:
sudo /Library/Application\ Support/VirtualBox/LaunchDaemons/VirtualBoxStartup.sh restart

Here's what I get when I do that:

Hello

The error is coming fromVirtulbox not vagrant.

So have you done any change on virtualbox like update/reinstall ?

My first suggestion will be a reboot, but if you can reinstall and reboot will be safer.

No need to sudo, that can change permissions that then later can can use issues to the normal user you use.

Are you running this on the host rite? no nested VM here?

Alvaro.

I'm currently running vagrant version 1.7.2, I don't believe I've ever updated. I'm going to try now.

I've recently installed vagrant-hostsupdater and vagrant-triggers.

Rebooting my machine didn't improve things.

Don't think I've got any nested vms going.

Downloaded and installed vagrant 1.8.1, same issue.

I've been using a specific vagrant file: https://github.com/Varying-Vagrant-Vagrants/VVV

When I make a new directory, do a vagrant init, and then do a vagrant up, I get the following:
Bringing machine 'default' up with 'virtualbox' provider...
==> default: Box 'base' could not be found. Attempting to find and install...
    default: Box Provider: virtualbox
    default: Box Version: >= 0
==> default: Box file was not detected as metadata. Adding it directly...
==> default: Adding box 'base' (v0) for provider: virtualbox
    default: Downloading: base
An error occurred while downloading the remote file. The error
message, if any, is reproduced below. Please fix this error and try
again.

Couldn't open file /Users/stevensmith/Dev/vagrant-fun/base

Ah, so I needed to do vagrant init hashicorp/precise32

But I'm still having trouble

When I vagrant up I get to this point:
==> default: Waiting for machine to boot. This may take a few minutes...
The guest machine entered an invalid state while waiting for it
to boot. Valid states are 'starting, running'. The machine is in the
'poweroff' state. Please verify everything is configured
properly and try again.

If the provider you're using has a GUI that comes with it,
it is often helpful to open that and watch the machine, since the
GUI often has more helpful error messages than Vagrant can retrieve.
For example, if you're using VirtualBox, run `vagrant up` while the
VirtualBox GUI is open.

The primary issue for this error is that the provider you're using
is not properly configured. This is very rarely a Vagrant issue.

Uninstalling vagrant-hostsupdater didn't change things. I was mistaken about vagrant-triggers being installed.

It works now. When I tried to open the virtual box gui I got an error message saying I needed to reinstall virtualbox. That finally fixed it.
