Constant Refinement and Continuing Progress at Instantiations

At the invitation of F.A.S.T., we're discussing various aspects of Instantiations and the VAST Platform.

Who should attend?
There's something for everyone at this event: business, technical, marketing, and design.

Description
Instantiations has attracted some attention with its new branding, new website, and the release of VAST Platform 2021. Join members of their staff as they discuss the evolution that's been occurring over the past 30 years and how it made reaching these milestones possible.

Instantiations will discuss the direction their technology company is headed, provide insights about how they'll get there, and demo the technical breakthroughs that have been recently released and are upcoming.

For everybody in this group, the specific topics we will cover in the technical demo are: Asynchronous Programming in OOP with futures & promises, OSProcess, Tonel & Git, Cross Platform Development, ARM support and much more!

I also enjoyed the event. Interesting to see what rich mix of technologies is behind our favorite Smalltalk implementation.
The demo of OsProcess, Futures and Promises was impressive and it is great to get these things integrated. As a SaaS-provider we increasingly have to deal with scenarios like the covid data collection example. Lots of requests that can be sent out in parallel.... So I immediately see a few areas in which our Application can profit from these new features.

The advent of Unicode and more web protocols is also a highly appreciated outlook. The idea of looking into interfaces for, say, Flutter, also look promising. So one thing is clear: VA Smalltalk has some road ahead, and I guess we have great guides aboard.

One queston I forgot to ask during the presentation: what is the exact motivation of renaming VA Smalltalk to the VAST Platform?

Thank you Joachim for the kind words and for joining us!

I forwarded the question about “VA Smalltalk” -> “VAST Platform” to Greg (our Marketing/Creative Director for those that don’t know him) and he’ll speak to that.

A great weekend to everyone!

Yeah, I'll take this one:

While we've been using "VAST" as an abbreviation for "VA Smalltalk" for more than a decade, we included "Platform" in the name because a fundamental strength of VA Smalltalk is that it's a comprehensive development platform. Also, when viewed from outside of our Smalltalk community, we felt that "VA Smalltalk" could be misinterpreted as solely a language runtime, and not the powerful environment that it actually is.

So, we chose to officially make the changeover to VAST Platform 2021 to coincide with our rebrand, and the release of new foundational features coming to VAST 2021, like Async call-ins, Futures/Promises, OsProcess, Tonel, etc.
