UUFBR Board of Trustees

 

The undersigned hereby petition the Board of Trustees to remove the Black Lives Matter (BLM) banner from the main building for the following reasons:

 

1.       It is a political statement of support for a political movement. We understand political to mean relating to the ideas or strategies of a particular party or group in politics. We understand BLM to be a political movement that has been embraced primarily by persons holding liberal political views and opposed primarily by persons holding conservative political views.

2.       That any political statement purporting to represent the official position of the UUFBR and its members is inappropriate because Unitarian Universalism is a liberal religion which emphasizes personal as well as group liberty of thought, expression, and action.  We, as individuals, do not want to be identified, because of our affiliation with the congregation, with being supportive of any political group.

3.       It creates a highly charged political environment within a space that should be reserved for the spiritual and social needs of its members.

4.       It has created an environment in which some members are reexamining their future level of participation with the Fellowship.

5.       It was placed on the building without approval of the membership.

 

This petition is not to be understood as a statement of opposition to the BLM movement.  The signers differ from one another in their opinions regarding BLM.  It is a statement of concern that the politicization of the UUFBR is neither healthy for our congregation nor for our faith.

I will put this on the agenda for discussion at our upcoming Board meeting.  I would question the assertion that Black Lives Matters is a political movement.  It was endorsed by the UUA at its 2015 General Assembly.

I fully support the Standing on the side of Love banner that says Black lives Matter. 

I see it as a moral imperative to support our seven principles that begin with the inherent worth and dignity of all and support justice and fairness to all. 

In the beginning many were upset by the rhetoric of the BLM  and allowed themselves to move away from those early statements. 

Since George Floyd there has been a cosmic shift in the movement as seen visually by the vast numbers of non Black people marching in Support of justice and fairness finally after 400 years on our shores of systemic oppression. 

It’s time. It’s not political anymore. It’s a deep moral issue. It’s right. 

And yes some of us have different views. But as always....we stand together on the side of love.

To those who wish to take down the Black Lives Matter sign:  As stated in the letter "Act to end racism" -

We acknowledge that in America today, Black Americans are confronted with systemic racism that threatens their very being. George Floyd is but a recent graphic and egregious example of these continuing transgressions based on the color of skin.

Removing the sign is clearly choosing to remain silent to the insidious, systemic racism that exists in our society.  The act of removing the sign is clearly supporting the continuation of the 'status quo.'   Removing the sign is a statement that UUFBR is unwilling to confront racism and seek to dismantle it with its own actions.
