(King’s Chamber)

Arthur: Gawain, you seem very distressed. I know you well enough to know when you are worried about something, so don’t try to say you are not.

Gawain: It is ...I’m not….weel

Arthur: It is also not like you to be so inarticulate. It must be something serious. It has to do with these alien visitors, yes?

Gawain: taking in a deep breath and letting it out: To some extent aye. I think that most of them are what they seem. The captain and her brother seem weel versed with what their culture kens of us. The nurseis harder to know but seems sincere. It is the security chief….

Arthur: He would not be the first to be deluded by Morgan. She has had centuries to perfect her methods.

Gawain: nodding: Aye, but this man is a hardened soldier. He is so completely deluded that it seems unrealistic for such a cynic. It makes me doubt myself. Have I lost my ability to discern evil? Is he simply deluded or is he a willing compatriot. He is a military man, yet he seems to have no respect for the chain of command at all. Despite that, I didna sense real evil from him. If I have lost discernment, I canna adequately protect you or what is left of our Order.

Arthur: pouring a tankard of ale for himself and mead for his nephew who preferred it.) We both know that discernment comes from a pure heart. I have never had reason to worry about yours. After all, only three of all our knights were privileged to have the Grail show itself to them, You are one of them. I have always thought that it remains in our tabernacle because you are here. It is not as if we could prevent it from moving on its own.

Gawain: flushing with the reference to his own privilege to have viewed it without its veil: I still dinna understand how it favored me.

Arthur: smiling: It happened because it knows what I know. No man alive has ever worked harder or been more dedicated to the ideals of our Table than you. You have worked to be a perfect knight since you came to Camelot as a small boy asking no privileges for being my nephew. You did the work of a squire when you should have been just a page. In all that time, you have never strayed. You are a good husband, a good father and a good man. If you feel this Clifton is not a villain at heart, then he is not. It also means…

Gawain: ...that I must protect him from himself. Morgan will stop at nothing to destroy him if she finds that he can’t help her. I’m not sure what to do because talking to him has been like speaking to a deaf man...a sarcastic deaf man.

Arthur: Perhaps it is time that I speak with him.

Gawain: startled: Whether he is knowingly acting against ye or is being controlled by Morgan, he is dangerous. I wouldna wish ye in his presence, your majesty.

Arthur: Alright, let’s see what happens. I know you have already doubled the guard. Give yourself some time to rest.

(Gawain took his leave from the King and went to his office and then through a hidden panel that led down to the deepest part of the castle, a part that few knew existed. He came to a heavy oak door and then took his sword, knives and axe and put them on the table by the door. Then stepping softly, he opened the door and opened the door. He entered a silent, candle lit chapel of unusual beauty. It smelled lightly of incense. A heavy rug of beautiful design covered the floor. There were no windows but exquisite tapestries adorned the walls. Gawain walked forward to a veiled tabernacle made of gold. He dropped to his knees and bowed his head. He quieted his mind and devoted his thoughts to praising God and thanking him for his many blessings especially for his wife and children.

A sense of peace and being loved enveloped him as it always did here. He turned his mind to his worries going over them silently in his mind. Somehow words seemed not only inadequate but unnecessary in this place. The Presence here knew him inside out, knew his thoughts and concerns. After some time of silence, he did feel solace. The tabernacle glowed brilliantly as if to assure him that he was still close to the Presence, close enough that he would still be able to sence any evil about him.

Gawain lost track of how much time he spent there in simple prayer and union with the Presence in the Grail. The church bells could not be heard here. Still he sensed that a good deal of time had passed. He should go to the normal chapel for Vespers. His absence would be noted, and there were many of the knights who still did not know where this chapel was. He did not want anyone coming to look for him with everyone on high alert about Morgana. He stood, bowed and left the chapel with some reluctance. The atmosphere here was so deeply loving that it filled his heart and eased all concerns. He had laid the issue at the Lord’s feet. He would not now tell Him how to handle the problem. He knew now that he would know when it was time to act, and how he should. ::

((Castle Chapel))

:Gawain slipped in next to his wife and children, immediately taking his little girl in his arms as he knelt next to Lady Grace. His son knelt next to him. They listened as the priest led the psalms and joined in the singing of the hymns. Gawain noted with some surprise that the ship’s captain and her brother were there. When the service ended, he and his little family walked over:

Gawain: Captain MacLaren, Ambassador, I must say I am a bit surprised to see ye here. I didna think people from your time were involved in religious services like this one.

Gavin: My sister and I are a bit unusual. Although most people of Betazoid heritage practice a different religion, our father is human and we were raised in Scotland. We had an Irish grandmither, so we practice Christianity.

Johanna: We dinna often have the chance to pray in such a beautiful place. It is truly beautiful. I hope it is alright that we came.

Gawain: Of course it is! I’m sorry that I hadna thought to invite ye both. :looking at his wife: I suppose ye did that, Grace?

Lady Grace: I did.

Gawain: I dinna ken what I would do without my lady wife. I have too narrow a focus on security to think adequately about offering hospitality. I apologize.

Johanna: Not at all. It is the normal problem of command. There is no need to apologize.

Gawain: I dinna see your security officer.

Gavin: Nae, I dinna expect he doesna attend serviced on the ship either but perhaps I’ve just missed him.

Gawain: No need to explain. He is free to have his choices although that doesna include associating here with a verra dangerous sorceress. He would ask your intervention there, Captain.

Johanna: I understand Sir Gawain.

:: Short time later in the Castle Hall::

:Johanna spotted Clifton and walked over to him::

Johanna: Chief, we need to talk.

Clifton?

Johanna: I cautioned you about not creating a problem when you wanted to explore; however, there is a problem, a serious one.

Clifton?

Johanna: Have you been meeting with the women called Morgana?

Clifton?

Johanna: She is persona non-grata here. She is banished from the caslte and fillage. She may also be banished from the part of this planet occupied only be the mages and Dewines (women who practice magic) all those we would consider “supernatural” . There are a variety of life forms here and all of them have banished this woman. In giving her any support, you risk seriously changing the balance of power and altering the culture here. That is a far greater violation of the Prime Directive that what our presence here has already caused.

Clifton?

Johanna: In all of the earth literature of this culture, there is unanimous agreement that she is a dangerous, dishonorable but powerful woman. They have good reason to fear her.
