The Yoruba: A New History is the winner of this year's Vinson Sutlive Book Prize administered by the William and Mary Anthropology Department.  The congratulatory letter to his is reproduced below.

Dr. Ogundiran:

I’m the chair of William & Mary’s Anthropology Department, and I write to let you know that your book The Yorùbá: A New History has won this year’s Vinson Sutlive Book Prize.  Congratulations!

The Sutlive Prize is awarded by my department at William & Mary for the book that makes best use of anthropological perspectives in order to examine historical contexts and/or the role of the past in the present. You can find details about the award and a list of previous winners here: https://www.wm.edu/as/anthropology/sutliveprize/index.php.  There was stiff competition among the books submitted to the committee, but yours rose to the top for all three committee members.  It’s an inspired choice.

Along with offering you the award, we invite you to deliver the annual Sutlive Lecture.  Let’s talk soon about this event, including potential dates, travel arrangements, and honorarium.

Once again, congratulations!

Sincerely,

Martin

Congratulations. I am not surprised. The work that went into that book deserves this.
