Beautiful interview! I wonder who the interviewer was. He must be quite close to the legend.

I always love wa Thiong'o. There is something organic, almost spiritual, about him, his voice and perspectives. His unexaggerated persona is always soothing. His initial point about the proverbial prophet not being acceptable in his own country is not typical to Kenya, though. That Mazrui was never recognized by a Kenyan university is what you can say generally about how African academia celebrate (or uncelebrate) their own. Soyinka was not honored with a honorary degree in Nigeria until after he won the Nobel Prize, and of course, expectedly, he turned it down (at the then UNIFE).

By far, my favorite part of the interview is the celebration of the humanity of Mazrui - not just an intellectual giant but a good human-being, caring and generous.

May Mazrui's legacy outlive him!
