What a piece of sad news to start the year! We should be consoled by the fact that although Professor Ayo Olutokun died prematurely at 69, he blessed our world with incandescent ideas that would continue to light out paths till eternity. It is also consoling that Professor Falola championed a heroic battle to save Professor Olutokun as best as medical care was concerned, and the great members of this community lent their incredible support within a short time.

It speaks volumes about the ephemerality of life that the prolific public intellectual who only two weeks ago (December 16") published a futuristic piece for 2023 in his column in The Punch titled "2023: Returning power to sub-national governments," has so quickly succumbed to a dramatic brief illness!   

May his soul rest in peace, and may God console his family, friends and comrades.

Hmmm, I wonder why we are so apt to praising the dead than helping the living. It beats me big time! Where are these big guns when the man being eulogized fought his war of survival? Apparently, elegies are easier to chant than a show of benevolence and a display of charity. This should not be an acceptable model of social responsibility. It just should not be. Period!

Just my own point of view.

So far, the most devastating piece of news this year is Ojogbon Falola’s telegram to the USA-Africa Dialogue Series and it hit us very hard: 

 “Ayo Olukotun is Dead: We lost the great man a few minutes ago”

May his soul rest in perfect peace. May the Most Merciful Almighty be with his family. 

Ayo Olukotun, the Prince, doyen and dean of Nigerian political commentators, our knight in shining armour forever standing up for the politically, socially and economically defrauded, the marginalised, the ostracised, the voiceless, the misdirected, the defenceless, the abused and misused, the misled and oppressed,  left his legacy of diagnoses and cures  - the directions, sound advice to be considered by those who are challenged to take up the mantle of responsibility for moving the nation forward - and that responsibility devolves on us all.

According to the wisdom of the Elders, “ It Is Not up to You To Finish the Task, but You Are Not Free To Avoid It”

The personal mission of his earthly existence accomplished, the unfinished business that he has left behind, as enshrined in the directions the Nigerian polity must realistically confront and the decision that we - collectively must take,  are succinct and clearly forwarded for all of us to read and understand, in that his very last article published in this forum  - which I also posted on my Facebook page on September 23rd, 2022: Consider Nigerians voting with their feet

Even though having said, Dayan Ha Emet, I do not question the Divine Judgment, at the same time  I’m also angry, sad, saddened,  tearful and ask the same questions as MOA 

As Caesar’s wife Calpurnia put it on another fateful day, “When beggars die there are no comets seen; The heavens themselves blaze forth the death of princes.”

Adapting that line to the very contemporary reality of our times, in our African nations, it would seem that when African presidents fall ill or are in serious need of medical attention, they fly or are flown to London. So why wasn't Ayo Olukotun flown to where he could receive the best medical attention available, somewhere in the African Diaspora? 

I read Ojogbon Falola’s terse, shock telegram soon after we returned home from a dinner in town, it was too late to phone Baba Kadiri,  so I phoned Samuel Oloruntoba, but didn’t get him ( it’s a six hours time difference between Stockholm and Ottawa) phoned an equally devastated Samuel, a little later and he gave me the low-down that our beloved Ayo Olukotun had been successfully operated for a brain tumour, and that Ojogbon Falola ( and others? ) had been doing their level best to ensure that he got the best available treatment in a topnotch Nigerian facility in Nigeria…

As always, it’s the Sabbath, this  6th  - 7th of January coincides with the annual  Orthodox Christian Christmas, it’s also the 25th anniversary of the passing away of my beloved Mother Adekumbi , and on the American history calendar, the day that some Americans stormed the capitol….

What are we to do, now?
