She was erudite, bold, and uncompromising, yet humble, unassuming and easily approachable. She struck conversations with younger scholars easily, not divulging her identity but just eager to learn about their work and advise if needed. Afterwards, many could not believe with whom they had been chatting. As a senior member of ALA (African Literature Association), Micere found time to attend ALA conferences, and was a lively participant at many panels; even even when she was dealing with health issues she still put in the occasional appearances when she could - not saying much, but just drinking in the scholarly ambience. She cared deeply about children's rights and the environment, and nothing could take away her great sense of humour. A few days to the USA elections in 2020, she sent some of us a hilarious musical video, "Vote Him Away" set to the tune of "Wimoweh: The Lion Sleeps Tonite." popularized by Miriam Makeba." 'Him" of course, being Trump; we had a good laugh over that. As Prof Akachi said, ALA had a special session celebrating her 80th this last conference in May at Knoxville, TN. It was hybrid, and both zoom and the room for the physical gathering were packed. It was a good moment. Although she was too ill to appear, she was listening, and said a few words to us; her daughter and family members were present, and very appreciative of tributes. It was a good gathering and the energy was strong and positive. Keep smiling, and Rest In Peace, Micere Mugo..

Aaah, very difficult to believe, despite the fact that those of us who know her, know what a warrior she had been these many years, fearlessly staving off the monster illness that had dared to knock at her door and eventually snatched her.

What a gracious, soft-spoken creature she was--- a quiet, CLASSY LADY, brilliant as she was beautiful and poised. Sis Michere Mugo, take your  much-needed rest and sleep well!
