Thank God that at least Don Kperogi, one of the most vicious and relentless critics of Brother Buhari is safe and sound (out of harm’s way) over there in Atlanta, Georgia. Touch or threaten a hair of Don Kperogi and expect a Pavlovian response, a mighty holler from Don Harrow of Amnesty International, and the beginning of an organised response and some sabre shaking from His Majesty Toyin Falola & the USA- Africa Dialogue Series family (although, let truth be spoken, there may be some among us who would smirk if Kperogi got arrested on arrival at the Aminu Kano International Airport: “Serves him right! He is only getting his just deserts! We have been telling him to take it easy with his virulent criticism of everything Buhari, but he would not listen!”
This is not a military regime and, true or false, we can only speculate about the contents - bomb or some anthrax powder in the alleged “parcel”. True or false, the parcel incident has only succeeded in raising the spectre of Dele Giwa revisited.
Press freedom is probably still the main issue here, but seriously, does any journalist or newspaper in Nigeria have the right to publish and distribute what is ostensibly a spurious rumour based on some alleged leaked documents, “that relations between Nigeria's national security adviser, the army's chief of staff, and the chief of staff for the presidency were strained.” ? At any given time in the past history of Nigeria, this would be akin to fomenting misinformation that there is a military coup d’état brewing, thus exacerbating an already tense security situation
In the interests of national security, we are to suppose that any responsible government should be anxious to squash such unqualified news making the rumour mill, considering the great harm that such misinformation or anti-government propaganda could do, to the detriment of stability in a nation that is already mired in instability…
