Nigeria at the Cross-Road

Jibrin Ibrahim, Deepening Democracy Column, Daily Trust, 9th August 2024

Yesterday, twelve of us, as concerned Nigerians, democrats, and veterans, who are worried, embarrassed, and traumatized by the depths into which Nigeria has sunk in recent times issued a policy brief.

The past 25 years of democratic governance, while meant to usher in an era of progress and prosperity, have instead been marked by a tragic irony. The political class, entrusted with the responsibility of leading the nation towards a brighter future, has seemingly benefited immensely, while the people who voted them into power continue to grapple with the harsh realities of economic hardship, insecurity, and pervasive corruption. The dwindling quality of leadership, the diminishing capacity to deliver on development, and the recklessness and lack of empathy displayed by those in power are deeply troubling. The future of our teeming youth hangs precariously in the balance, jeopardized by the very individuals who should be safeguarding it. The stark contrast between the opulence enjoyed by the political elite and the suffering endured by the masses is a testament to the profound disconnect between the government and the governed.

The consequences of this political failure are painfully evident in all facets of Nigerian life. Insecurity has continuously worsened to levels where the country can be said to be at war with itself. Corruption has not only escalated to levels unprecedented but has also become pervasive and endemic, subverting every effort at development and destroying every institution of government. Infrastructural deficit, institutional decay and the dearth of human capital has continued to frustrate development. Agricultural production has been stalled by insecurity and ineptitude, creating hunger in the land and malnutrition in children. In the face of these human sufferings Politicians have continued to show insensitivity and recklessness as they continue to pad the budget, purchase expensive vehicles, allocate themselves horrendous allowances and borrow huge amounts that could not be paid during their lifetimes. In short, politicians in the last 25 years have brought the country to its knees. Today, Nigeria is a depressing story of a country whose future is in total jeopardy.

The tragedy of the last one year is that we now have a regime that has not only doubled our troubles but has shown neither empathy, prudence, nor competence in governance. The World Food Program reported that malnutrition among children has more than doubled in just the last one year. The withdrawal of petrol subsidy, without any plans to cushion the effects, have sent prices through the roof. The floating of the Naira a la IMF has sent the Naira crushing, causing chaos in the economy and poverty in society. The rise in taxation and electricity bills has led to closure of many businesses and even private schools are finding it difficult to operate. The executive and the legislature (some would include the judiciary) appear to be in cohort to plunder the country to the finish. The purchase of the presidential yacht, the Betta Edu scandal, the budget padding, the minimum wage saga, the contract for the coastal highway, the purchase of the presidential jets are conveying a picture of politicians on the rampage, who are either oblivious of the consequences or just too intoxicated to care.

All these have created a Huge Trust Deficit. This deficit has been feeding a growing cynicism which is driving a lot of despair and hopelessness. As hunger ravages the pauperized population and citizens become increasingly desperate, crimes shoot up, spaces become unsafe and ungoverned and anarchy looms on the horizon. Meanwhile political office holders continue to live in their bubbles, unscathed and undisturbed. We shudder at the thought of the bubble busting.

Nigeria appears to be a dangerous Cross-Road. As concerned citizens we have found it necessary to put out there in the public space a policy direction starting with what appears to us to be the most pressing inextricably connected issues of economy, security and corruption. While we do not claim monopoly of wisdom, we believe kicking and screaming alone would not bring the end to this misery. We therefore decided to give some solutions in the hope that this could provoke a national discussion on the way out of this imbroglio.

State of the Economy –

·      Revitalized Social Safety Net Programme to capture and deliver to the most vulnerable

Corruption

·      Operation Clean Sweep: Launch a high-profile anti-corruption campaign targeting prominent cases of corruption involving politically exposed persons (PEPs) and high-ranking government officials. This operation, akin to a surgical strike, would demonstrate the government's unwavering commitment to combating corruption at the highest levels.

·      A specialized task force within - Asset Recovery and Forfeiture Initiative: To set up a taskforce to reclaim stolen wealth since 1999 this will deter future corruption, asset recovery mechanisms should be strengthened to trace, freeze, and repatriate assets hidden in foreign jurisdictions. This will involve collaborating with international organizations like the United Nation Convention Against Corruption, UNCAC

·      Whistle-blower Protection and Reward Program: To encourage reporting of corrupt practices and empower citizens to play an active role in the fight against corruption, whistle-blower protection mechanisms should be strengthened

·      Public Procurement Reform A comprehensive overhaul of public procurement processes should be undertaken to enhance transparency, competition, and accountability.

·      Asset Declaration and Verification System: A robust asset declaration and verification system should be implemented for all public officials. This system –

·      Specialized Anti-Corruption Courts: To expedite the prosecution of corruption cases and ensure justice is served, specialized anti-corruption courts should be established at federal and state levels

·      National Anti-Corruption Education Campaign: A nationwide anti-corruption education campaign should be launched to raise awareness about the negative impacts of corruption, change the mindset and promote a culture of integrity and accountability. –

·      Strengthen the judiciary by enhancing the independence, capacity, and integrity of judges and judicial staff. This will involve providing

·      International Cooperation and Asset Recovery - Nigeria should strengthen international cooperation to combat cross-border corruption and illicit financial flow

Nigeria stands at a pivotal juncture, confronting a series of formidable challenges that threaten to derail its progress and undermine its potential. Nigeria's future hinges on its ability to navigate this critical juncture. The path forward will undoubtedly be fraught with challenges, but with unwavering determination, collaborative effort, and a shared vision for a better future, Nigeria can overcome its current difficulties and emerge as a beacon of hope and prosperity. The time for action is now. The destiny of Nigeria lies not in the hands of fate, but in the hands of its people. Let us rise to the occasion, embrace the challenges, and work together to build a nation that is truly worthy of its vast potential.

To accomplish this, leadership is critical. Nigeria needs leadership with vision, prudence, and tenacity; a leadership that can muster the political will to act, the will to walk the talk, and the will to deliver. Such leadership must also possess the virtue of being accountable and responsive to the yearnings of citizens. The flip side of leadership with vision, prudence, and tenacity without being responsive and accountable is that it can be autocratic. To acquire this kind of leadership, we should be prepared to re-calibrate our leadership recruitment process to recognize and prioritize competence, character, and courage of conviction.

..
.. actually we should not be indifferent to partisan politics (gbemi Tijani MST)
.Kudos for this evidently compliant  Thinking Aloud from OBJ!Ex President 2ce!

Don't you think or agree these are raw materials for critical writings to  make Political tenure one single term of average of 4&6=5 years max! I don't mind 4 years - it's not  enough to do something deliverable & commendable .Nigerians won't forget you as they didn't forget the military that spent 6 months & within 2 weeks all tasted and witnessed Change during Late Ramat Murtala brief reign!.
Who knows -if we could ve witnessed Social Change  - development indices beyond hunger & food availability. This is also vital to keep life sustainable. In fact a nation that can't Make Agriculture modern and open access will soon inevitably welcome cannibalism.
May God forbids this here!
Long time I have blogged about this imminent paucity of basic livelihood.
.Lots of public money will also be saved if we are responsible electorates who vote in only conscientious Politicians and Appointed Reps/Creative and Patriotic Bureaucracy.
Unless these personnel are ethical and keen about Politics of Welfare for the people - we ate still gar from Getting It Politically!
NB.
Politics controls all!
Just reflect what aspect of your life are entirely not directly or indirectly impacted by politics especially if if you re to flow with Good Governance.
Again partisan politics controls huge money which if heartless ly and unprofessionally dispensed will backfire to the State and the people - sooner or later.Interestingly EFCC & it's ally are still frequent ly exposing Big Fund scandals of past years & decades due to personal & collective carelessness about our integral integrity and Lack of Human love & disregard to Human Rights Consciousness - whereas you re entrusted with Public Money   for a higher purpose - not for you & your family and dumping in foreign bank accounts!
Hope Nigerians will not even shortlist prospect politicians   whose agenda will be to go and embezzle public money as it's the penchant for decades we  barely tasted effective living by  UN, WHO& UNICEF  standard   not to talk of delivery of  what was actually budgeted for National Development in all sectors.
* That's why we must shun any coalition that ll indulge in wasting or by cohort scandalously embezzle huge  funds budgeted for any iota of development approved by the legislators  after due diligence critique.
* we should abscond from Politicians who LL pursue funds for local development but not disbursed for the same grassroots they canvass concern for.
* Blessedly we hope LGAs financial autonomy will be real henceforth.* If they re genuinely concerned they'll manage it judiciously.Lets all watch because every Nigerian belongs to at least one or two LGAs.
* Let's beware of looting or mismanaging  huge money!
*  Nigerians & top politicians know about this.Despite those in politics are rarely free thinkers - they re predominantly Muslims or Christians or other faithfuls -- why them are their faith not self - chastising?
* Why have they always forgot agreement to deliver dividends? Amos 3:3!!!! Two must agree! The bible succinct ly state this.
I m  so surprised but assuaged now that OBJ has observed impartially about what kind of candidates we should vote for..

"Enough is Enough "Ukpabi Asika  said decades back - it's should be our Guide Word henceforth ,
Town & Gown &  The real marginalised Masses...
Let's Think reflect and join Authentic progressive Revolutionary Actions .The recent  One Day EndBadGovernance PROTEST is a useful sensitization for Good Governance...Nothing inimical of peaceful and communicate Social Change desired by all!  It's okay . However we all need to do more !
What can be productive than manifest Protest is this ---
Fellow Nigerians.
After each successive election:
  Dont Call it Quit !
  Get a committee
  That ll report
  Elected Politicians
  Performance every
  90 days or less tenure
  Nigerians are voracious
  Voters & politically
   Aware - only during
  Elections & Campaign!!
This is not enough !
  Tacitly Not  Enough
  To Watch
   meticulously
   Follow Projects &
    Promises  by your
    Own Elected  -
   We are
Entitled to know & ask for Accountability of &
Profile of Delivery of Promises Made + Listening Ears on  Constraints - if Any!
Nigerians detest "Mumu"

How else are we different from Mumu Statusquo?

We must monitor & evaluate Politicians Performance 6mthly-1yr
Reports for Town Hall Must be shared to the Grassroots levels &Translated to the Masses on the farms &Shops, Complexes ..
Patriotic linguists & Fine Artists must help to simplify  any ideological complexities for the marginalised audience. All
Towards Inclusive Delivery & Update Information on " Our
Politicians Report/Dividends Promised - Integral in his/her Campaign Activities Prior to Zero in as Elected Candidates....
Nigerians perennially
Have the penchant To be
Politically Resourceful Prior to Voting but
They re Perhaps The Most Passive After Election results- They characteristically disappeared into Oblivion
Whereas Another Group
Could ve tagged.M.&E
Who LL monitor & Attend Briefings of Performance & Report Constraints if necessary..
Almost all are either reticent or completely disappeared or disengaged once their candidates lost!
Democracy isn't for elected candidates alone!
Insofar the State guarantee free & fair elections for all.
The winning candidates must deliver dividends to all the Citizens in his jurisdiction/constituency.
What of international observers?

Do they watch more than General Election Proper? No .
Otherwise there ought to be Intermittent evaluation reports too like 2 - year Monitoring Media
& NGOs & critical independent observers -journalists inclusive - not only the Press under Public Management.
Frankly speaking I repeat !
This era of 21st century & organized lives in the past centuries
-"politics controls everything & us all".

So Fellow Nigerians
We must not toy with it
Nor handle with levity -
All about politics & Politicians henceforth!
I m chastising with due respect and love to all Town,Gown, Royalty & Clergy & The Viibrant  & Aware Youths and Citizenship @ home & Abroad & In Africa because Nigerians are all over the world - What an ubiquitous nationals!
Let's handle the process of politics  seriously & dispassionately - whoever wins will be the next focus of Political Love.
Thanks to my high school headmaster that ensured social  sciences tangentials to Politics ( Government&
Economics are included as elective  WASC subjects we could offer finally for certification in the 70s ...
We need political literacy
We are controlled by partisan  politics.Henceforth don't discourage any friend or peer from.investing his time  & purpose in Partisan politics .It's a wealthy sector but it depends on what you bring and what your agenda to serve selflessly  to impact human  development.
That's the way it goes
Don't let us be fanatical or obsessed with a candidate that didn't win nor has any Active popular mandate insofar his election is impeccable.
Ps
Why is politics not yielding enough result in 64 years & in recent 25 years it's because we ve not really recognized how powerful it is  to change destiny beyond our livelihood.
We need politics & Political leadership that ll deliver dividends that will unfurl our Manifold Natural resources -blessings from God on Nigeria - if you like trace it to Our endowment!
Pps
Now we must not just brace up for Voting Most Eligible Candidates --
We must justifiably Follow up Performance Reports Progress & Constraints if any ..
*Henceforth
  We must elect Rightly
  On Purpose & Hope
That he/she will deliver
Dividends Promised & Score Satisfactorily 70%
To Qualify for reelection after 10years if so desired.
Why not instantly successive ly ?
Because the Quality Queue is so long & it's unfair to indulge in one opportuned or sagacious ly lucky winner alone !
In fact the best for Competitive democracy is one Solo Tenor & the same Politician can be permitted where else to serve till another 10 years .This -- my invention depends on the Masses s Verdict. But same notion is becoming an experimentable mention in the USA !
The philosophy behind my own hypothesis is that No one has the Absolute Wisdom To serve All The Time.
Let's try another brain & morality but not any candidate Without Compassion universally needed in any milieu To  deliver dividends beyond the elites ..
