Augustine Togonu-Bickersteth,
Here was a good Swede : Dag Hammarskjöld
So, what's dear about your man? I notice that from the very beginning, your intention has been to dodge the main issue: Ukraine .
That’s why you start some servile, sweet talking to him about “ agriculture” whilst Rome is burning; and hence you begin your epistle to your avuncular Biden / Uncle Joe, with an ingratiating “Dear President Joe Biden ”, some kind of Devil’s Dictionary definition of Abasement, or maybe you were only observing the usual diplomatic protocol/ nicety by being polite, since you can’t address him the way that his powerful adversaries would be prone to do, i.e. take him by the ear and say, “ Looka here Biden, and listen good…”
Easier said than done, taking him by the ear, his wrinkled ear, when he’s sitting over there in the highly guarded Oval Office, out of harm’s way, and we are sitting here, in cyberspace.
There’s this line from Surah Al-'Alaq - 14-19 of the Holy Quran that goes, “Is he then unaware that Allah seeth? Nay, but if he cease not We will seize him by the forelock -The lying, sinful forelock - Then let him call upon his henchmen! We will call the guards of hell.”
As for me, from my headquarters here in Sweden, I have written to Presidents exactly only twice. My first letter was to Siaka Stevens at the point that broke the camel’s back and this was when he thought that Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, it should be kosher and halal to bury the world’s nuclear waste in Sierra Leone .
My second letter was to Baby Bush when it looked like the Imam Ali Mosque in Najaf then under siege was going to be bombed/demolished - God forbid - or badly damaged, and my brief message to both presidents was more or less the same - cause and effect: axiomatic: If you do x, your e$$ will be gra$$.
And then, with the latter, I heard a voice whispering in my ear: ”Cornelius, are you threatening the President of the United States?”
As for Stevens, once upon a time, my younger brother ( opportunist) used to have dinner with him on Thursdays, so if he got my letter at all, my younger brother could have convinced him that it’s not possible that I could have written such a letter…
This is the latest: Russian forces wipe out Ukrainian Akatsiya, Gvozdika howitzers in Kherson Region
During the eight years war, 400, 000 people perished in Yemen. Within 14 months of the Russian military incursion, according to the most reliable estimate, circa 350, 000 people have been killed.
After the so-called “Spring Offensive” no one knows what the body count is going to be.
Those of us who live over here in Sweden still have the Chernobyl disaster fresh on our minds. I remember its impact on Sweden , 1,100 kilometres away from the scene and that within three hours people had bought up all the iodine tablets that were available and all the pharmacies were out of stock with that product for weeks to come. In 2011 in Japan, it was the Fukushima nuclear disaster and in the United States in 1979 it was the Three Mile Island accident. Two years before that Gil Scott-Heron wrote “We Almost Lost Detroit” about the Enrico Fermi Nuclear Generating Station.
Someone’s got to tell President Joe Biden about the danger to the biggest nuclear facility in Ukraine and in all of Europe, namely the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant and what would happen if just one stray missile were to hit it….
Dear Augustine Togonu-Bickersteth, I would like to alert you to the reality that by the day, the situation now is getting a lot worse than the situation that’s parodied in Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
Be that as it may, and cognisant of the fact that flattering Uncle Joe is not going to get us anywhere, this is the sort of news that should be equally worrying to President Biden:
