this is the opening quote of the article gloria posted from ha'aretz. indeed a horrible result as i see the world, so often, now torn between authoritarianism, which is grounded in hatredof Others, and regimes with more tolerance and desires to bridge gaps or mend fences. The former is repressive, the latter open. what irony, this was the division that athens saw in its difference from sparta 2700 years ago.

"Religious Zionism, the Knesset list that distorted the Zionist project and transformed it from the national home of the Jewish people into a project of conservative, right-wing, racist, religious Jewish supremacism in the spirit of Ben Gvir’s teacher and rabbi, Meir Kahane, is now the third largest political force in Israel. That is the true, chilling significance of the election held on Tuesday."

Ken and Gloria:

Gloria asked the question: if democracy produces what we don’t like, should we accept?

Yes, I said. Then she broadens the challenge….

You cannot say that you believe in the idea of one person, one vote and not accept the outcome.

Not to accept is authoritarianism on the other side of the coin.

Accept meaning as legitimate is one thing. Accept and resist is what I replied. But govts and votes are not sacred. If a govt began a genocide, what would you do? Even hitlers’ generals attempted to assassinate him. And Mussolini was overthrown and hung. Monks burned themselves in Vietnam and we’d call them martyrs. Resistance to Putin is now admirable and inspiring

Let’s just say i hated trump and what he stood for, but accepted the results, and tried to work against the consequences. Ditto for bush, though the florida vote was an abomination. But i accepted it. For vietnam i tried more active resistance, but not so far as joining sds and their bombing. But i more or less agreed with them, except it had bad impacts on public opinions. You draw your own moral line on what you can accept before leaving the country and joining more active resistance. Burundi and rwanda both have opposition parties and militia resistance movements.

Professor Gloria  in Excelsis Emeagwali,

I was a very different person back in circa 1996 when I read Meir Kahane: Our Challenge ( the full text)  in which he sets out his vision of the Jewish State, and I could not find a single word wrong in it, which does not mean that his subsequent “ They Must Go” (full text) which I have not read doesn’t deserve some of the opprobrium you would like to pour on it, especially if the “They” refers to the kind of 2nd Nakba that he could have possibly had in mind…

If you have the time, you could also be interested in “Zionism”  religious, secular, spiritual, the early struggle, the establishment of the state  of Israel  all on -pages 178 - 202  of Modern Judaism, mostly a critique by Dan Cohn-Sherbok

Here’s our The Middle East Conflict in Maps

We know that it’s all about the sanctity of life, Human rights, ethics, and romantics. I imagine that you are sick and tired of hearing that after their fifth election in less than four years Israel is still the only little oasis of democracy in a parched oil-rich desert of despotism.

We could begin with MEMRI  or if you so prefer, we could even begin with The Religion of Peace  or we could begin with this to either allay or further magnify the fears of the fearful ( bearing in mind that Islamically speaking, those who believe are not afraid, least of all, of the likes of Benjamin Netanyahu or his holy or not so holy sidekick Ben-Gyir or other companions of the fire):

3 things Ben-Gvir will attempt to promote as Israeli minister

Better still, if we want to talk about “Religious Zionism”, where to begin if not at the beginning?

At this point you may want to reflect on this question, and, no blasphemy from you, please:

Is or was the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob a “Religious Zionist”?  A racist? Was or is Jesus? That is an apt question for American Evangelists/ the Evangelical Right wingers who are giving the impression that they are all fired up by the Holy Spirit, to hasten the construction of the Beit Hamikdash //The Third Temple in Israel in the belief that that would precipitate or hasten their Messiah's return to judge the living and the dead..

Obviously, the Prophet of al-Islam, Sallallahu alaihi wa salaam, as leader of the opposition ( so to speak) and as the Zionist Rabbis put it, as head of the “Ishmaelites” the Prophet of al-Islam, Sallallahu alaihi wa salaam, was not a zealot or  “a religious Zionist” nor are any the 12 Imams alaihi salaam, or their righteous spiritual descendants or their disciples and apostles, and, fast forward, nor was Ayatollah Khomeini and nor is Iran’s current Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei or Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah the dedicated leader of Hezbollah, nor are the stalwarts of HAMAS or  Islamic Jihad or al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades or The Arab League, or The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation of which Nigeria is an honourable member…

We are all where we are now and the question remains where did this conflict begin?

One approach to that question:

At the root of Christianity and later on, al-Islam, are the revelations encoded in the Tanakh commonly known as The Hebrew Bible, and all three, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam  - in which you do not believe - begin with what’s revealed in Bereshit/ Genesis - where we find the story of Adam and Eve and the Christian idea of “ original sin”, without which, theologically speaking from a Nazarene point of view,  born of the virgin Mary, Jesus’s mission on earth would not have been necessary...

There’s Blake’s vision is of the “New Jerusalem” descending readymade, from Heaven, and by the New Jerusalem he of course meant England, reminiscent of Chaim Weizmann’s retort to Lord Balfour’s ridiculous suggestion, “But we had Jerusalem when London was still a marsh!”

Many of the academics at the USA - Africa Dialogue Series love to talk about “context”. Well, here’s some background.

The background to what’s at the forefront of religious Zionism, the original project that was birthed at Mt. Sinai when Israel received its Divine Constitution  to be “ a nation of priests, a holy nation

Any 21st-century talk about what animates the modern nation-state ought not to leave out the aspirations and the practical or visionary ideas that animate separatist movements whether of Oduduwa, Biafra, Azania, South Sudan-

Since there’s so much bad blood about Meir Kahane, an ideology now being referred to as Kahanism, and active political offshoots at work in Israel such as Kach and other so-called “far-right” political parties in Israel such as Otzma Yehudit now being led by overnight celebrity Itamar Ben-Gvir
