This book represents one of the most up to date explorations of Yoruba origin spiritualities and their philosophies of ritual. It is a compilation of debates about the character of
Isese, Yoruba origin spiritualities, in
Nigeria’s Yorubaland, where they originated, and elsewhere, in their near
global spread, debates ongoing on the social media site Facebook, even as of
the 31st of January 2025, as this book is being published.
The tradition is referenced in the title by the term “Orisha Spirituality’’ in
order to suggests its cosmological structure, defined by Orisha, divine beings believed to underlie the structure and dynamism of the cosmos.
The debates were ignited by Moyo Okediji’s challenges to
the Isese community, beginning from his Facebook posts of December 2024, and
represent what might be an unprecedented public outpouring of theological and
philosophical discourse on Yoruba origin spiritualities and their affiliates in
other African thought systems, and particularly on Isese’s Ifa branch, a
divination and knowledge system that significantly synthesizes classical Yoruba
cosmology.
The book will be regularly updated and new editions published when enough new material has been gathered.
Oluwatoyin Vincent Adepoju is a scholar of knowledge systems and processes, publishing significantly on Yoruba thought systems, as well as a practitioner of Yoruba, African and other spiritualities, at the intersection of traditional approaches and innovative constructs.
