Dr. Veronica Achieng Okello is a seasoned researcher and senior lecturer at Machakos University (MksU), Kenya, in the Department of Physical Sciences, where she also serves as the Director of Quality Assurance. She holds a PhD in Analytical/Environmental Chemistry from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Binghamton, USA.

Her research centers on the development of green, sustainable remediation and detection strategies for heavy metals, non-conventional pharmaceutical pollutants, and other emerging xenobiotics. Dr. Okello is affiliated with several professional organizations including OWSD, Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), Kenya Chemical Society (KCS), and Women in Nature Network (WiNN) Global/Kenya. She currently serves as the Vice Chair of OWSD Kenya and is the Research and Program Coordinator at Consortium for Sustainable Development in Africa (CoSuDAf), a multidisciplinary network of scholars from institutions of higher learning across Africa.

Dr. Okello began her academic career at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) in Kakamega before joining Machakos University in 2015. She teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses, supervises research, and mentors’ young scientists. Her achievements include numerous competitive research and capacity-building grants such as the:
• 2016 Seeding Labs Instrumental Grant (USA)
• 2020 OWSD Early Career Fellowship
• 2020 & 2023 Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program (CADFP)
• Several Chemical Security Program (CSP) grants by CRDF Global
• 2022 Erasmus+ Mobility Grant with the Technical University of Freiberg and five Sub-Saharan African universities
• 2021–2022 Nuveen International Collaborative Research Award (co-PI), which enabled a short-term scholar visit to the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) and user access to Argonne National Laboratory (ANL), USA.

She is also a 2024 TWAS awardee and actively participates in two Erasmus+ programs. As the current country coordinator for the YEMAYA Women in Science program in Kenya, she continues to advocate for inclusive scientific engagement. In addition to her academic commitments, Dr. Okello is the founder and coordinator of the Go Green Machakos University Club, a vibrant student-led initiative promoting sustainability. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling, mentorship, community development, and outreach projects, particularly in chemical safety and security education and environmental conservation in both formal and informal sectors.

Her current Scopus H-index is 11, reflecting her impactful contributions to the scientific community.
