This article touches on the former US Ambassador to Nigeria and South Africa’s discussion of Nigeria’s strategic interest. Ambassador Lyman points to the significance of Nigeria’s huge population and the status as a global oil player but says that strategies should always keep up with the changing times. The author of this article discusses the real problem associated with the Nigerian State is that of the decision-making process and the institutions that have been subordinated to the superfluity of politics. This is the idea that the politics of Nigeria, like any other state, distract from the strategic significance of the larger picture by reducing everything to immediate and to the present. In all, this article brings about an important question as to what extent do politics inhibit the growth of a state and nation. This is something we in the US won’t understand because our democracy allows stability, whereas, in other countries like Nigeria that may not be the case.
