“Come writers and critics
Who prophesize with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won't come again
And don't speak too soon
For the wheel's still in spin
And there's no telling who that it's namin'
For the loser now
Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin' “ (Bob Dylan)
Even with political sooth-sayers, sometimes, but not always, shit happens and happened recently, in print, the unrevised version in Nigeria's national newspapers throughout the land:
"ALTHOUGH I have said in the past that next year’s presidential contest will be a short in the dark…”
Really, Professor Kperogi?
Evidently (according to the printed evidence)
sometimes, "short" can pass as the longhand for "shot".
A short in the dark indeed.
An old declension: Shit, shat, shot.
Indeed
he did
As we say in Nigeria
“One whole professor”
Nota bene: “hole” (as in asshole)
is also spelt “whole”
and is also sometimes inter-changeable
in pronunciation:
For the times they are a-changing
The way the crow flies
so too the ears hear
the mouth speaks
the pen writes
Her Majesty's English
and as Chief Aluko usually signs off
“And there you have it!”
