Caretaker of water
Angered,
Surge of water.

Abodes,
Work places
And farmlands
Turned into rivers.

Wailings,
Tear flows,
Starvation,
Deaths.

Officialdom
Suddenly became busy
In pretend rescue efforts.

Dawn,
Drew drops,
Brisk walks,
Sweat cascades.

Walkways littered with slumbering
Victims of unscrupulous leadership,
Roads paved with potholes
And open stench oozing drainages.

Siren blares
Of pompous officialdom
Returning from all night carousing.

Correction: second line should read "Dew drops".

Oga, Chidi;
I like this poem. It takes on the everydayness of simple pleasure and set it amid the pomposity and crudity of power in Nigeria—and the rottenness of everyday life. Such is the contradictions of the systolic and diastolic rhythms of life in Nigeria.

In addition, the poem reads well; its cadence and rhythm work smoothly. It exudes something of the brisk morningness of the Nigerian sun wrapped in dews and mists, yet promising fire next hour.

This is a good poem. It drops gently on the soul as the tropical dews, briskly walking the reader into sweet cascades of emotions along the walkways of memories and gentle appreciation of life spent away from the open sore of life in brutalized Nigeria. Thanks.

All said and donme, let us count our blessings.

We give thanks and praises for the timely release of Professor Adigun Agbaje who like a true freedom fighter has the attitude of “ I am not free until all the other captives have been freed”

“Their previous promises

Unfulfilled,

Unsettled this land.”

Such a true and tragic conclusion, incontrovertible, poignant, and moving.

It’s the reality and this reality is one of the reasons why voluntarily and involuntarily so many people, boys, girls, young men, old men, dreamers, women, and children have fled and are still fleeing from hearth and home in Nigeria and other African countries, on into exile in foreign lands in the so-called Diaspora. There are those who were born into slavery and suffering and therefore believe that suffering oppression, slavery, discrimination, lack of opportunity, and poverty is the only reality and that poetry, like an airbus or the fabled winged buraq is the only means of escape  -  the only trans-portation, the only flight from our earthbound reality to the romance and much advertised spiritual bliss with the angels and saints, martyrs and former husbands, wives, concubines, mistresses and girlfriends under the loving gaze of Rabbil Alamin the Creator, the unelected President, Law-Giver, Supreme Leader, Monarch, King of Kings, in Heaven, Paradise…

Us the people are ANGRY - that's our reaction  - the effect of your poetic thought - and it’s not a reaction of contempt of the kind that the highfalutin elicits so spontaneously. May the Almighty save us from contempt and arrogance, we who pray daily to be humble, unlike Bertrand Russell in e.g.  his “An Outline of Intellectual Rubbish “ and the other scoffers herein, worse still, not only those, some of the unmentionables could even be lurking within your own family, one of the reasons why I have never said wholeheartedly the 12th blessing of the Amidah (against heretics) which goes

“And as for the slanderers let there be no hope;

And may all wickedness perish in an instant,

And may all Your enemies be cut down speedily

The wanton sinners - may You speedily uproot, smash, cast down, and humble

Speedily in our days.

Blessed are you HASHEM, Who breaks enemies and humbles wanton sinners.”

Chidi, right here and right now, second to none, you are we the people’s voice, and we the people’s poet and no one has ever said it better, no one is saying it better because you never miss the mark and any so-called poet who is not heartfelt misses the mark, and missing the mark is the original meaning of sin. Big grammar does not make it. In fact, big grammar is comedy and is not to be taken seriously. When has big grammar ever competed with the vivid, the pithy, and succinct?

Wanton Looting

Ransom kidnapping & extortion

Please take note that kidnapping is at the heart of what the eighth commandment means: “Thou Shalt not steal!

"One may smile, and smile, and be a villain "

The politician as conman, specialist expert in the art of deception :

 “Aspirants to treasury looting”.

However, maybe to avoid libel and slander you have not named them by their proper names. Of course, they know who they are. We also know who they are:

“ From the big billboards

They stare at us

With pretend smiles,

Aspirants to treasury looting

Stare at us.

The scoundrels,

They stare at us.”

In Zaire, one of them was popularly known as “ The Leopard”.

His son Kongulu was nicknamed  “Saddam Hussein”  - a name that turned up frequently in Soukous lyrics….

Why can’t we be blessed with leaders of the calibre of Jose Mujica “the world’s poorest president” ?

In Brazil, thank GOD Lula won

I heard some right-wing nutter telling a news channel (either the BBC or al-Jazeera) that Bolsonaro the bozo, was “ a man of God”.  How can anyone in his right mind allege that such a bozo is a “man of God”  and how can “ a man of God” be found guilty of cutting down and logging all the trees in the  Amazon’s Garden of Eden?  And how can such a one, unlike Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak who spared no efforts or financial costs in coming to the aid of their fellow citizens,  how can a bozo like Bolsonaro, manifestly devoid of any human empathy during the Covid pandemic that ravaged the poor people of Brazil, be referred to as a “ man of God”? It beggars belief.

Tomorrow is election day in Denmark and  no matter what happens, we are to expect tighter anti-immigration laws)

Tomorrow too Israel goes to the polls and at least according to the Jerusalem Post and Israel National News, former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is all set to return to the saddle and to ride again, especially if there’s a low turnout of Arab-Israel voters. Hezbollah’s Sheikh Nasrallah & The Mullahs in Iran are also praying for the best possible outcome in those Israeli elections, even if among the other seasoned parties to the Middle East conflict are  those  that are at least down to earth realistic  about their “The Little Satan” believing at worst, “ Better the devil that you know, than the devil you don't

Dear Chidi Anthony Opara

From me to you:

Yeshayahu / Isaiah 40: 26

“Lift up your eyes on high and see, who created these, who takes out their host by number; all of them He calls by name; because of His great might and because He is strong in power, no one is missing.”

You can’t become or convert to what you already are, what you are already. Of course, you are free to become more you. More Yours Truly. Like Frank Sinatra: “ My way”... “ My Thing “, and since you liked songbird Kenny Rogers I suppose that you could like Stephen Stills, too

Both of us are right, and a poet is one who reflects his times, the times we are living in. Which does not mean to say that there are not also flowery poets, ( “ flower power”) who look out of the window, observe the pregnant clouds, count daffodils,” catch rainbow trout” and even shoot in the dark.

This past week I have been leafing through years of fire and ash  - south african poems of decolonisation - edited by Wamuwi Mbao

In 198, I imbibed the expository sermon on this verse, at Umuahia:

“The LORD says to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet." ( Psalm 110: 1

May the Almighty Himself, the world’s greatest poet bless us all

There’s Tehillim / The Psalms - said to be most beautiful in their original language of composition Hebrew of course, and not in any pretentious Buckingham Palace English or our humble Robinson Crusoe’s Man Friday’s  Broken English ( the pretentious jive monkey) or the King James Version or Amos Tuituola’s or  Sam Selvon’s rub -a-dub style which of course had not yet been born or conceived by circa  9th - 5th centuries BC. And of course, the Kabbalist won’t be the last to tell you that God created everything through the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet.

The Quran succinctly informs the believer that all Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has to say is  “Kun, faya kun”

I particularly like the various passage in which, speaking in the First Person he lauds some of His Great Works: Job 38-39 ( King James Version)

I came to the conclusion that we are both right, humble you & bumble me, after listening to this monk  How does meditation practice develop the mind?

BTW.my "mind” is underdeveloped and is in need of development ( just like an underdeveloped/ developing  country.) Ram Dass said that if the Buddha were one’s therapist, by the end of the treatment one would have attained the stage of enlightenment…

I’m a beginner and this is where I begin with these succinct instructions: Developing Samadhi

Caressed

By the way Chidi,

You do perhaps remember

Madeleine Albright threatening

“There’s a special place in hell for women

Who don’t support Hilary Clinton “?

Well,  since the Almighty is the fountain of Justice,  just in case anyone is wondering whether or not there is a very very special place in hell reserved for the elite lootocrats or if after all the looting, ransom kidnapping, rape, and murder down here on earth they’re are going to to be enjoying forever in heaven with the 72 virgins, they had better think one more time and whilst still down here on earth the so-called Christian Brethren amongst them had better read Revelation 9 again.
