*Rwandan President Set To Run Again In 2024 Election.*

Channels Television .
Updated July 9, 2022.

President Paul Kagame, de facto ruler of Rwanda since the end of the genocide in 1994, has indicated he will stand for president again at the next election due in 2024.

Asked if he would seek re-election, Kagame said: “I consider running for another 20 years. I have no problem with that,” he told the France 24 news channel in an interview broadcast Friday.

“Elections are about people choosing,” he added.

Kagame changed the constitution in 2015 allowing him to remain in power until 2034.

The 64-year-old swept the 2017 presidential election with an official 99 percent of the vote.

He was just 36 when his Patriotic Front party forced out Hutu extremists blamed for the genocide in which some 800,000 mainly Tutsi people were murdered between April and July 1994.

Kagame fiercely defended Rwanda’s record on human rights and political freedoms at a Commonwealth summit in Kigali at the end of June.

Opinion on this matter

“POWER TENDS TO CORRUPT; ABSOLUTE POWER CORRUPTS ABSOLUTELY.”

LORD ACTON.

I hope President Kagame does not emulate the problematic leadership genres in Zimbabwe (Mugabe), Cameroon (Biya), and Uganda (Museveni). He should be careful of the role and self-interests of political sycophants, too.

There is much to be learned from the leadership genus, and genius of the late President Madiba Nelson Mandila of South Africa.

i have strong opinions on this matter. kagame rules w an iron fist; you could not have a greater contrast than with nelson mandela.
kagame is not out for personal enrichment or even personal power, as the other authoritarians named are. but he is intolerant of political opposition, and will resort to force and worse to suppress it.
a last point. it is widely believed now that the resurgence of m23 in east congo is due to ugandan openings in the congo, i.e. the acceptance of the armed forces in the drc, and perhaps other initiatives in e congo, with alliance with tshisikedi. the return of m23, if really w rwandan support or even initiative, has meant hundreds of thousands of people now fleeing, many deaths, and chaos. nothing could be worse for the eastern congo than the return of this dreaded militia.
