U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken visits Congo

Biden’s Africa strategy seeks to revitalize ties with the continent

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s trip to Africa this month—the third in under a year—is a demonstration of the Biden administration’s growing commitment to Africa. Witney Schneidman and Landry Signé examine the outcomes of the visit and the recently released U.S. strategy toward sub-Saharan Africa.

Intra-African trade has been underestimated for years

Hardly a presentation is made on the topic of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) without starting with a lamentation about how intra-African trade is “abysmally low” compared to other continents. But this observation is simply not true, Andrew Mold explains in a recent paper.

The Biden administration got a wake-up
call given Africa’s response to the Ukraine-
Russia crisis. It  initially assumed that
Africa could be forced to toe the line by
sanctions and intimidation. That didn’t work.
Now the tone has changed towards
cooperation and negotiation. Fine.
The arrogance of the first half of the year,
perhaps  pushed by the neocons in the administration, had to give way, in the
light of dismal failure. The administration realized,  too, that anti-French sentiment
is on the rise, paving the way  for more pro- Russian inroads. Malian documentation
of direct  French support to the jihadists
has not helped.
