…Police rescue three-year-old from suspected kidnapper

The Oyo State Police Command has rescued a three-year-old girl, Nimotallah Sulaimon, from a 39-year-old female suspected kidnapper.

The suspect was paraded on Thursday in Ibadan at the police headquarters, Eleyele, Ibadan.

The police also arrested five suspected kidnappers who allegedly abducted the 17-year-old son of a herdsman, Shakiru Weti.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Shina Olukolu, said that the female kidnapper allegedly abducted the child in Olorunsogo area of Ibadan.

“She was intercepted and when interrogated, she informed the police that she was in the area to beg for alms when she sighted the girl who was later identified as Nimotallah Sulaimon unattended to and strolling away.

“She thereafter took her to the Muslim area of Ibadan where she resides.

“Sequel to this, her neighbours at the sight of Oluwatoyin with the girl, challenged her and inquired how she came about the child.

“She told lies that the girl belongs to her older brother and his wife who had a conflict earlier that day and that was the reason she brought the girl to her house at Muslim Area of Ibadan.

“The community members, who did not believe her story, reported the incident to the Divisional Police Headquarters in Ogbere, and after preliminary investigation, it was discovered that the child was abducted,” he said.

Speaking also on the arrest of the five kidnap suspects, the commissioner stated that Weti was kidnapped on September 17 and his abductors called on September 22 to demand N1million ransom.

He said the ransom was paid.

The commissioner added that the suspects were caught with the ransom sum and the cell phones used in the transaction.

This post covers two kidnappings, one of a little girl and one of a 17 year old son of a herdsmen. The first kidnapping was a beggar who took a lone little girl, and the second was a group of five kidnappers who demanded a ransom of N1 million. The ransom was paid, yet the ransom was found alongside all the suspects and the cell phones used in the transaction. Although the ransom and suspects were retrieved, I don't know if I totally agree with the initial meeting of the demands of the kidnappers.

This article highlights the presence of kidnappings in Oyo, which has a relatively small population of about 3 million people. A woman took a child- to whom she had no connection to. This is interesting because in America kidnappings are usually carried out by family members, friends, or acquaintance. It is also interesting that the article brought cup the fact that the little girl was taken to a "Muslim Area", which could pint out religiously biased undertones in the article.  As well as reporting on the kidnapping of a little girl, the article also summarizes the kidnapping of another Nigerian named Weti. Weti was given back through ransom and five kidnappers were caught. Although it is good that all of the kidnappers, in both cases, were caught, I am not sure if I agree with the way the officials went about it by paying the ransom. Furthermore, I disagree with the way this article presented the kidnapping of the younger girl because it includes unnecessary facts that can add to a hint of racism or religious divide.
