Hi Cheat Friends,

As most of you know by now,  Cheat Fest and the Cheat Race has been canceled for this year.  All of the instructors here at Calleva have been paying close attention to recommendations from the CDC and the governor of MD, especially in their advice not to gather in groups of 10 or more, and keeping the elderly at home. We want to protect our clients, our staff, our families, and ourselves. We are heartbroken at having made this decision but we feel that the most responsible thing to do right now is to pause Cheat Training for the next two weeks. This will give us all time to focus on our families and staying healthy. We hope that schools will reopen in two weeks and we will have a better perspective on how hard coronavirus will hit our community.

The Potomac River is a place of solace and comfort for me and each of us as paddlers and outdoor people. We know how important being connected to one another and to the river is to you. We want to encourage you to take time outside, staying in shape, maybe attaining in small groups or with just one other person. Please take good care of yourself during this time. Here are some suggestions on paddling related things to do while home:

Community is truly the most important thing for us at Calleva and so we are making this choice to protect our clients and staff. Feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns.

I plan to start a Cheat Training facebook page where we can stay in touch and log our own workouts, maybe give suggestions for books and exercises. I hope you will join me in this!

Of course, I will keep you posted about any changes to this plan or that affect Cheat Training.

Hugs from afar, Ashley

What a bummer!

Of course, I completely understand and hope this won’t be too hard on Calleva and the instructors as so many folks are being hurt financially by the covid-19 shutdowns.

Thankfully, I’ve been doing this long enough that I have a set of on-river exercises I can fall back on. Maybe you can send out weekly a set of on-river exercises folks can do solo or with a partner?

Cheers,
Mark

Ashley,

thanks for letting us know.

Sadly, this is the right decision.

For my mental health, I'd like to paddle Thursday anyway.
Although more is not merrier nowadays, I'd be happy to coordinate with whoever else wants to join.

Thanks
Jarno

For anyone with a strong hankering to get out and paddle something big during lock-in, I watched a great documentary tonight. Available on Amazon Prime, “The Weight of Water” (2018 — not to be confused with the 2002 drama of the same name) is  the story of a blind man taking on an absurdly improbable challenge: kayaking the Grand Canyon. Erik Weihenmayer balances his fear of drowning with his fear of remaining paralyzed in a prison of darkness. He desires the elusive state of being that so many of us seek, to be engaged in the present.

“It’s so hard to be fully in the moment because there’s so much fear, there’s so much anxiety, it’s like a person looking through a window at an experience rather than being in the experience.” – Erik Weihenmayer

Nice cinematography. Good story arc. No glossing over the hard parts or the fear. It tells it like it is.
It was supposed to be shown this week as part of the DC Environmental Film Festival.

And it’s paddling the Grand freakin’ Canyon!

Enjoy,
Mark
