Hey all ...

The Subject #, '2OPS68-3', can't be found on Google nor can the part be had from KLIXON's new owners, Sensata Technologies ... they can't even tell me what value it opens at ... assuming it is a Normally Closed type switch.

The nameplate on my Stbd. Twin Disc MG506R marine gear unit says: 'MIN. OIL PRESSURE WHEN CRUISING  335 P.S.I.' (BOM 34696 [Normal] oil pressure specification: 350-370 P.S.I.), so, I would expect the switch On value to be something less than <335 PSI ...

I'd like to add mechanical oil pressure and oil tempertaure gauges right at the gears in the engine room ... has anyone else done this?  If so, the brand and models of gauges used?  What sort of physical implementation of gauge panels was used in engine room?

Thanks, Kevin Mc

Check out Stewart Warner! Our bout 73 42"sf came with s/w gauges could not find the originals and changed all on the flybridge with s/w heavy duty plus. Summit racing carries them.
also on cabin console I have mechanical oil pressure gauges.
they look Great. saved all old ones incase one goes bad in cabin.

Thanks GP! ... I'll check out Stewart Warner at Summit Racing ...

If you'd be willing, and are able to indulge me, I'd be curious to see a pic of the mechanical oil pressure gauges you installed on cabin console (assuming you mean lower helm control station) ... are they for engine oil pressure?

Thank you GP ... I am in contact with Stewart Warner to determine specific gauge suitability to my needs (and to see what the current HDP line looks like ... no images on their website).

I appreciate you taking the time to get me the pics ... your Lower Helm mechanical oil pressure gauges are what I have in mind for monitoring the gears ... at a location adjacent to them right in the engine room.  Kevin Mc

I've got to ask. Where are you located? I"m in New Port Richey Fl. Used to be in Huntington Beach Ca. I have a S/W catalog and they show all there series. Again Summit Racing carries there gauges. That's where I got mine from.

My wife and I have a trip coming in September to the seattle area. Would you like to get together and talk boats (Uniflite) ? we will be there from 13th - 18th. Plenty of time to decide?
Thanks

GP ... 13th SEP ... that's a ways off yet ... with any luck I'll have a bunch of boat work accomplished and may even be using my boat ... let's re-visit the notion again in a month or so ... Kevin Mc

Hey guys, I am wondering the benefit of a transmission oil gauge? I have twin cummins VT 555's (triple nickles) with twin discs. The oil pressure sensors "tweet" indicating a low pressure warning every time I shift. I was told by my yard that there is a temporary drop in pressure when you shift and this tweet lets me know that the pressure warning system is working. I have owed the boat 21 years and the transmissions have been flawless.

Also now that I'm retired I would like to do my own preventive maintenance on the transmissions and wondered what should be done and how often.. Any thoughts? Anyone have instructions on maintenance? Thanks Bob Schneider

Hey Bob ... what year and which model of 42 do you have? ... which model of Twin Disc marine gears do you have?

I want to run mechanical transmission oil pressure and temperature gauges right at the gears in the engine room for several reasons:

- I am getting what I am near certain is a false positive Stbd. Drive Oil warning (alarm) light all the time ... I suspect the Stbd. gear oil pressure (alarm) switch (what this thread is really about) is stuck Open ... I'd like to see the actual oil pressure under various conditions to ease my concerns that I may actually have an issue with my Stbd. gear in my older new-to-me boat ... plus, my Twin Disc BOM (Bill of Materials build sheet) calls for 350-370 PSI @ 1,800 RPM and 180° F, minimum 335 PSI while cruising ... relatively high, as these things go ... I want to see for myself the operating pressures of both gears while cruising ... otherwise, all else is really guesswork ...

- oil temperature gauges will tell me my cruising oil temps ... again, a peace of mind thing, however, depending on temps seen, it will allow me to decide whether I need to go from Mobil Delvac 1230 (30W, 150° F to 185° F) to 1240 (40W, 175° F to 210° F) oil ...

If you're running MG-506 R and L gears (I suspect you are), I have a digital copy of the Service Manual SM-175, Document Number: 1015921, Revision E, August 1985 ... it is 31.34 MB, so, too big for here or attaching to e-mail.

What file sharing services do you use? ... I tend to use 4Shared.com, however, non-internet ad-saavy users seem to have trouble using the free interface.

Anyways, unless one of your gears is equipped with a Trolling Valve, you should not have an external filter cannister (mine does, on Stbd.[R], and uses the PUROLATOR P-192-04-3 cannister, and a Baldwin PT82-HD element) on the gear so equipped ... just an oil strainer that should be checked / cleaned whenever you change oil (easiest to pump / suction it out of the oil level gauge tube).

The audible (alarm? yes?) tweet you are hearing when shifting is not something I believe my boat does, however, my usage so far has been minimal (and I've been pre-occupied during maneuvering due novelty of my new-to-me 42' DCS' handling characteristics), plus, it's hard to hear anything over my Detroits from the flybridge, where any shifting I've done has occurred ... and, I have issues with my alarm electronic modules, so, do not think alarm is functioning correctly ... I have read here and elsewhere that an alarm bell / tone ('tweet' if you will) while shifting does occur amongst other owners and can be considered useful feedback ... and not indicative of any problem(s) per se.

Bob ... you also asked about the servicing interval:
