Good morning

We have managed to unblock a blockage which we had identified on 6 Sprite Place as the source of pollution to the river on the 19th January 2022. When a message was sent in the afternoon that the river was still blue. Yesterday, we had to go and check if the sewage was coming from the same place, where we found that there was no blockage.

I then went to check downstream of the sewer and found that there is another blockage at 10 Swanfield Road and then reported it. I have requested control to prioritize it this morning.

Regards

Linda

Dear Councillor

Wastewater Networks will have to answer that question with regards to the sewer lines and blockages and overflows: Mr Vilane, Mr Ncwane or Mr Manzini for the West.

Pollution and Environment Branch will continue to monitor industries in the area and issue notices and/or fines for non-compliance with our Sewage Disposal Bylaws.

Dear Councillor

I’m not aware of colour entering the Umbilo river weekly. However, Wastewater Networks team have done a 1st step of bush clearing for quicker and easier response to clearing the blockages thus minimising the time that the sewage is overflowing into the environment. Further steps to be conducted later.

Dear Lusapho

There is a permitted company that discharges coloured effluent into that line. So, yes, when the sewer line gets blocked coloured effluent is forced into the environment and into the river.

Hi Claudia,

I think the core question the councilors are posing, is why are companies releasing  this coloured / dye effluent into sewer which ends up in the river when you have blockages. We need to explain whether this is allowed in terms of the bylaws so that they can explain to the community that this is a legal discharge, or not, to sewer and what is being seen in the river is as a result of blockages in our network. People are complaining about the colour.

Dear All

The question was posed to the Wastewater Network(WWN) team. I asked Mr Manzini, who is currently in charge of the WWN in the Western area and his response regarding Surprise and Swanfield Roads sewer was as follows: “I have a  team which is currently doing bush clearing so that it can be easy for the rodding team to work. This will further assist us to reach the blockage section easily for further investigation. The guys should be finished latter this afternoon.” Dated 17 Jan 2022. So WWN are aware of the frequent occurrences of blockages in that area and are working on solutions. Apparently there are projects in the pipeline, but they are waiting for budget approvals. A portion of a project would be to send cameras down into the sewer to determine the state of the line and to help establish the cause of the blockages, eg Tree roots, cracks, etc damage to the line, then to repair or replace. For further updates please contact the WWN team.

Thank you

Kind Regards

Claudia

The pollution is worse now - foam and chemical smells, especially at night.  Please escalate this problem - it is most likely a blocked sewer in Sprite or Surprise roads, as that is a historical problem.

Good morning Cllr Govender

I am receiving this thread for the first time.  Currently it is not just the issue of blockages in the Westmead area but a number of breaks along the length of the trunk sewer line from Westmead to the Umbilo WWTP caused by the floods.  Especially the section between Marianhill Road and Stapleton Road where the gabion baskets that were installed along the length of the river bank to protect the trunk sewer line have collapsed and the banks have been washed away.

Hi All - had a report from a resident today (16 June)

"Driving thru Motala Heights this morning the Umbilo River was blue! The blue colour was coming from Ramsamy Rd. We were in a rush so didn’t stop, on our return the river was a grey colour. There is very noticeable sludge left on the banks"

Not sure if anyone has reported this or if there has been any check?

Hi

The pollution coming down from Westmead this last week has been the WORST we have had to smell and see in the last 10 years of living here.  The chemical smells are unbearable, the colour and consistency is of thick, green, blackish sludge, which is covering the shallow edges of the river.  This needs to be reported to the Health Department as well please.  I think someone needs to come and take a sample - it is totally unbearable to live with.  I have repeatedly asked Isaac Gcwensa to investigate.  The wildlife are suffering - there is no food for them.  Nature regenerates herself but this poor river never gets a chance ....

Kind regards

Hi Justine

From your description it doesn’t sound like domestic sewerage.  I suspect that some factories are using the opportunity to dump waste into the river.  Problem is that all industrial waste and sewerage should somehow be stored onsite and taken away in tankers until the trunk sewer line and Umbilo WWTP are operational again but how that could be achieved I don’t know.  Except for anaerobic bacteria and cyanobacteria the Umbilo is effectively lifeless from Westmead to the harbour.

Hi

Thank you.  Please see attached photos of the status of the river today.  The smell is of chemicals - it's really really bad.  It's been like this for over a week, foam and  chemical smells intermittent throughout the day and into late evening.

Kind regards
Justine
