I created a keyboard layout using "New From Current Input Source," but now I can't figure out how to save it... If I hit "save," nothing seems to happen, and most of the options that would allow me to install it or find out where it's currently located are grayed out.

When I press "show organizer," my new keyboard doesn't appear. I don't see it in Library/Keyboard Layouts either, nor can I find it by searching for .keylayout files in Finder; the only trace I have of its existence is that the window I used to create it is still open on my desktop. If I closed said window, or my computer restarted, I would have no idea where to find it. Logically it's got to be somewhere on my computer, but... where? And/or how do I install it?

Hi,

I’m pretty sure you have 2 windows open, 1. the representation of a keyboard with your key assignments, and 2. A new "keyboard layout collection" file with currently only one keyboard layout listed, namely your custom layout. Its name is copied from the layout you have based it on + "copy".

You must have seen that second window before you started to edit the keyboard layout, no?

Anyway, you can close the first window without losing any work, but the second window will ask you "Do you want to keep this new document "Untitled"?"
Then you replace the name with whatever you want to call the bundle/collection and click Save.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Oh, by the way, it’s best to use a "studio" folder to save your files.
Don’t save them in any macOS location.

When you open the Organiser, you first have to navigate to your studio folder before it sees your custom layout(s).
For that, use the button: Set Folder….

(Note: I sent this response a moment ago, but I think I bungled something so I'm sending it again.)
Oh, I think I remember seeing that! At the time I dismissed it as clutter though since I didn't want a bundle file, and closed it. Is there a way to reopen it?

Depends...
Search for a file called Untitled.bundle, maybe on the Desktop.
Double-click that to open it.

What about in "Downloads"? Sorry for the late answer…

How much work is it to do all the edits again?
At least you can write down a list of your changes now, or print the keyboard, while you still have this window open. That may make the next time easier, I hope.

I’ve replicated your situation and you’re right, after closing the Bundle window, the Save… command doesn’t do anything.
Maybe something for John to change in the next update.

Nothing in Downloads :(
It'll be possible to do it again with an hour of time or so, just a lot of copy-pasting to be done.

OK, that’s not too bad :-)
Do you know the various ways of editing keys?
If you drag a key, you only copy the current level, but if you right-click and choose Copy Key, you can copy and paste all levels in one operation.
Or use the Inspector to go through all the different levels for one key.
Or activate Keyboard > Quick Entry Mode to go through all the keys (described in the PDF manual point 6.6.3 which is on page 30, that’s the page marked as page 26.)

By the way, I encourage you to put your custom layout in a collection/bundle.
It allows you to give it its own icon and assign it to a specific language.
The first is nice and makes it easier to spot it on the menu.
The second seems to have important effects on the behavior of some spelling checkers – although I must say I don’t have any experience with that and don’t know the details.

I’m late to this, having got back from a trip last week.

I discover that you can actually close the collection (bundle) window without closing a keyboard editor window for a keyboard layout in that collection (though you have to explicitly delete the collection). And then you can’t actually save the keyboard layout any more, so it becomes an orphan. Obviously, this is not useful behaviour, so I will look to fix this.

I tried converting from a collection to a keyboard layout, by changing the file type in the save panel, but that doesn’t work properly, so that’s something else to fix.
