Here it is, the first beta for version 3.6. Here is the change log:
  • Reworked the printing function. It is now much more efficient, and reliable (the latter due to some bug elsewhere in the system).
  • Fixed a bug in the colour theme editor which drew the focus ring incorrectly, making the editor useless.
  • Changed the old resource-based keyboard type definitions with XML definitions. This is to allow user-defined keyboard types to be used.
  • Added an option to the Keyboard Type dialog to import user-defined keyboard types from XML files. An explanation of the files is in a separate document in the Documentation folder (User-defined keyboard types.pdf).
  • Updated the kluchrtoxml tool from Apple to the August 2024 version (same build number, but the file size is smaller).
  • Updated the Unicode character database to Unicode version 16.0.0.
  • Updated the language subtag registry to version 2025-02-06.
The manual hasn’t been updated yet, as I haven’t had time to do that.

It should be available through Software Update or at https://software.sil.org/ukelele/.

Thank you, John!

Just reporting that I successfully updated from within Ukelele.

I also downloaded the .dmg to get at the new file "User-defined keyboard types.pdf" of course, even though I’m not sure when I’ll embark on the new adventure :-)

Thank you, John, for your constant dedication to a cause with a tiny number of users.
All the mac users who are also linguists (like me) or dialectologists or simply users wishing to create their custom keylayouts should be grateful.

I'm using Ukulele for years, for instance to use have access to numbers for Gimp, as the Capslock didn't work (still the case with Inkscape) and was happy to create a new keyboard for my azerty when I started to learn spanish, what a pleasure of simplicty (even if I had sometimes to correct the xml file to modify certain keys).

I’d be curious to know what required hand-editing the XML. It shouldn’t be necessary, so there would hopefully be a way to get it done through Ukelele, or there’s a feature waiting to be implemented…

hum, probably a specific glyph of french or the tilde in spanish? I can't remember it exactly (I did it in 2020), it was only a problem for one or two keys, easy to identify from Ukulele, easy to find and select in the XML file.

I inserted modification in  an azerty keyboard to access accent wovels with the alt key, instead of "Cmd+Shift+&", then the wovel…
This worked perfectly, but I had to find new keys for "æ" and "œ". As changing "~" to "ñ", l where would I put the tilde alone?

I can send you the bundle if you find it useful
As always, took me more time to think the changes than to apply them ;-)
But I never could have done it ithout Ukulele !
