As of the 8 pm Pacific advisory from the National Weather Service, Hilary had maximum sustained winds of 90 mph, which is on the high side of a Category 1.  Most of Southern California remains under a tropical storm watch, and the expectation is that the storm will still have that much punch once it arrives.

The story here has not been that California is going to be hit by a hurricane, but that it was going to be hit by the first intact Tropical Storm in the lifetime of most people still with a heartbeat. This is still on track to happen.

I encourage everyone to take all warnings and advice seriously. Despite the song it does rain in Southern California every year, but it is not an area that is really set up to deal with heavy rain very well. Don’t put the emergency response system there to a test they have not really prepared for. We just saw in Lahaina what happens when a community gets the kind of disaster it was not expecting…

Watching the KCAL/CBS2 news channel on the Paramount+ app. As usual, instead of having experts on to talk about the forces at work, they have recent college graduates standing outside where the worst of the weather is likely to hit.

I was watching ABC7 on YouTube when the earthquake hit at 2:41 pm PDT.   Within approx 20  minutes they had seismologist people on zoom .
