The 1% Club, Patton Oswalt's first-ever hosting gig, adapting a British show co-produced by BBC but airing on itv, had been ordered to series by Prime Video in '23...
Elsewhere on the Oswalt front, at the MPSE (film/video editors) awards, he called himself out as "the a--hole that forced you to take out a second mortgage on your home" during the strikes, and delivered a zinger about Daddy Zaslav...

I tried out for "The 1% Club" back in May 2023 - actually, I tried out for "untitled quiz show for a major streaming service," but based on the questions that were asked during the Zoom tryout, I figured out what show it was (and found episodes of the Australian version, which is hosted by comedian Jim Jeffries, to watch so I knew exactly what it would be like).

It was originally scheduled to tape in July 2023, but ended up being pushed back to February 2024 by the strikes. Unfortunately, they ended up only wanting me as a standby contestant, which would have meant having to sit around for 8+ hours and getting paid a whole $100, so it wasn't worth taking a day off from my actual job. (They also gave me less than one day's notice for wanting me at Television City for a 6:30 A.M. call time.)

A 6:30 a.m. call time for contestants for a game show.

Mark Goodson, Merrill Heatter, Bob Quigley, Stefan Hatos, Monty Hall and Chuck Barris are all doing the Lambada in their graves.

Barris would probably have been fine with a 6:30am call time if it meant he had stayed awake the previous night on a cocaine fueled bender

It's not so much the call time itself as it is the fact that the call time is so early because 1) there are 100 contestants, and 2) they're taking a full day to produce one hour's worth of game show.

And even with the edits they do nowadays, I believe that Fremantle can still finish a "Price is Right" in 90 minutes.  Of course, back in the Bob Barker days, Phil and Rog took exactly an hour unless there were really bad screwups.

I worked on the very short lived Dick Clark hosted (but not produced) game show “Winning Lines”. It took over 12 hours to produce a single episode. “Challenge Of The Child Geniuses” took longer than that… the second place contestant literally collapsed from exhaustion after the winner was announced. “Greed” took a couple hours to produce an episode.

The “Price Is Right” taping I went to back in September took quite a bit longer than that, mostly thanks to two extended stopdowns due to issues with the pricing games (the monitor wasn’t working on “Card Game,” and they’d forgotten to attach the sign to “Rat Race”).

Cardboard is a game show producer's friend, even if it's not as flashy as computerized graphics.

Oswalt's presence alone will be enough to make me avoid this one like the plague.

Same thing for syndicated “The Weakest Link”. I was also a standby guy but I got a flight to LA and two nights hotel in the deal. I was just as interested in the “how it gets made” part of the process so a day at NBC in Burbank watching it all was fine with me.
