That's an amusing Twitter thread.

In fairness, they were in a difficult situation with the wedding. There's no plausible excuse for Dad missing his daughter's wedding, short of death ... and unfortunately, they already had one of those all too recently. That CGI, though ... eeesh.

I had actually assumed that the wedding would be the season/series finale, and that they would just work without Garlin's character until then, aside from inserting an occasional old shot of him around the house.

Strangely, I don't think ABC has announced anything regarding the future of "The Goldbergs".  One would think that with Adam graduating from high school at the end of this season and the show already straining to keep the main characters close for story purposes (issue w/ Garlin not withstanding), there's really nowhere to go beyond this season...but you never know.
