The directors of Wonder Woman 1984 and The Trial of the Chicago 7 expressed as such during a one-on-one to be part of Variety's Virtual FYC Fest (clip provided) following WarnerMedia's decision to set the theatrical window, at least for their properties including ...1984, to zero (our report on that)...

The real problem is that they're romanticizing the movie theater experience. Once the theaters became multiplexed and the layout made the profit generating concession counters a central attraction it stopped feeling like worth going out of my way for to see a movie. If filmmakers want their movies to be seen and not have their box office crushed by franchise releases their only alternative is the streaming market.

I very much miss going out to the movies. But, to Tom’s point, in our small town there is one Main Street theater, which has been lovingly restored and modernized (state of the art video and sound). The owner comes out before the show and welcomes patrons, drawing attention to upcoming films and (many) special events. One can have dinner at one of many very good local restaurants, stroll leisurely a couple of blocks (or less, my favorite is across the street), and stroll another block afterwards to get a gelato. All the while running into friends, neighbors, acquaintances, enemies and tourists.

They also let you bring a big bowl or pot from home to fill with popcorn at a very reasonable price, and sell glasses of local wine.

Hoping to get back to this sometime......May or June?

In normal conditions, I see around 100 movies in theatres a year.

If Warners' decision means we're exposed to that much less Sorkin, close all 'of em down.
