"Lord of the Rings" prequel series given multi-season deal at Amazon.

Gee, I hope there'll be scenes featuring a lot of walking.

I am part of the minority of the population that both loves the  books (not a Colbert level Tolkien nerd, but I have read the Triology+the Hobbit 5 times each, and the Silmarillion once) and the films (have binged LOTR trilogy many times, and with my daughter once watched all three Hobbit films in the theaters then came home and stayed up all night watching LOTR on DVD). Many of the book lovers make a point of looking down on the films, but I take them on their own terms. I do not hate the Amazon idea, and hope It is better than The Hobbit films.

It depends on how ambitious Amazon is going to be. When first seeing this I rolled my eyes and then thought about how dated my assumptions are. My assumptions: the number of characters has to drop, the sets have to fit into a soundstage, and the plots have to fill a season of TV. But that was for the old way of doing TV. Amazon could do short seasons, which keeps plots from dragging on and having filler episodes. They can go the Game of Thrones route and use a huge ensemble of characters and lots of matte paintings and CGI to make imaginative sets. The question is how much Amazon wants to invest in the show.

My inclination is that they're seriously going to spend on this. Jeff Bezos wants his version of Game of Thrones, and they've reportedly spent $250m simply buying the *rights*. That doesn't include a single second of television. I can see them easily spending $100m-$150m for a season of ten episodes. Reports suggest that Netflix's The Crown is the most expensive show currently being produced at $130m for the first season, and that's without massive star salaries eating up the production budget. I can see Amazon topping that. Money isn't really an issue at this point.

So yes, I can see them going the vast Game of Thrones route: large bespoke soundstages; crews in multiple territories; no expense spared.

It's going to be about getting the right talent to produce it.

That’s what the raised dots on the F and J keys are for!

(Of all the things I learned in junior high school, I make use of touch-typing the most. When I worked as a closed-captioner way back when, I remember getting effusive praise from a couple of my supervisors for how fast I was on a QWERTY keyboard, specifically the numbers/punctuation marks on the top row.)

They’re not as cheap as standard keyboards ($50-ish at the low end), but the value of a backlit keyboard (often referred to as a “gaming keyboard”) is surprisingly underrated.

Agreed. Touch typing is a lost art.

For Christmas I was given one of those Bluetooth keyboards designed to look and feel like an old typewriter. Connected it to my iPad.  I’ve had it only a few weeks now, and don’t know how I’ve lived without it. Touchscreens are nice for a lot of things, but give me the clackity-clack of a good keyboard any day.

The pole lamp I used to illuminate this system (q.v.) will have to do until a good deal presents itself.

Producers and cast of "...The Rings of Power" push back at a reporter's contention, during a TCA panel, that the new effort is only "vaguely connected" to Tolkien's works... and address the inevitable comparisons to "Game of Thrones," especially with Robert Aramayo, who's co-starred in both...

"Rings" is drawing a backlash in only its first week, with reviewing suspended and the series' Rotten Tomatoes score plummeting well into the "rotten" end... the blame falls on "review bombers" more inclined to trash a given property "due to its perceived cultural or political issues rather than its actual quality"...

On the readers side of RT--the critics' rating is 84.  And this has happened before--just week before last with "She-Hulk Attorney at Law."  The fanbois think the Marvel Cinematic Universe shouldn't have any women.

A scene that perturbed Mr Martin was "fixed" for HotD:  The part where a boar does in a character during a casual hunt with friends is redone with lots of participants (should we hope for no human casualties?)... also improving on the original: a jousting event...
