The cable channel is beating the Big Three OTA networks in weeknight same day prime time viewership between New Year's and the Trump address last week--it should be pointed out that the nets were airing a lot of reruns and second tier reality shows during that time (and the OTA nets pay more attention to the seven-day numbers including DVR and streaming), but considering that thanks to cord-cutting FNC is in fewer homes than the OTA nets and the fragmentation of TV these days, they still have an excuse to run ads proclaiming themselves "AMERICA'S NUMBER ONE NETWORK!":

This isn’t surprising. For years FNC saw itself as a business and built itself up as a brand. They formed a strong identity and locked in their audience. At the same time the networks tried to fight the tide and hold onto a status quo while cutting budgets and closing news bureaus. And speaking of branding, can anyone differentiate between the networks anymore?

Ratings must not really be capturing the younger adults (say under 35).    I know so many that do not subscribe to cable, and if they are watching linear TV it is thru bootleg services online like thetvapp.to or other IPTV services.

For what it's worth, there was a good recent edition of "The Town" podcast that had a guest from Nielsen explaining exactly how ratings are measured in 2025.

While the press still likes to talk about same-day or overnight ratings, for anything scripted, they're really not so relevant today when you don't need to sit down at 9pm to watch your favourite show. Nielsen does indeed measure IP-based viewing, and they also now fully measure out of home (which has definitely helped pump some of those Super Bowl numbers).

As for the Fox live viewership, I wonder to what extent that is an aging audience?

Overwhelmingly. The bros (and it's bros--women in the young demos tend to lean left) are listening to Rogan and the other rightwing podcasts.

I doubt younger generations even consider watching the news on television anymore.

I certainly don’t.
