Built around Harry Stone's daughter, who follows her late dad into NYC judgeship. How Larroquette's character figures in it wasn't clear, and Rauch is only an exec (with her hubby)... https://variety.com/2020/tv/news/night-court-sequel-series-nbc-1234864038/ (link)

I've long said that "Night Court" was smutty, and not in the good way. We need this about as much as we need Kirk Cameron.

Dan Rubin ("...Kimmy Schmidt") wrote and exec'd a pilot, and NBC will look at it.

I still have concerns/apprehension about this (I'm not convinced that a Night Court reboot is necessary - or wise).  But I guess we'll see.

If Harry Anderson were still alive, maybe, but absent the lead actor and any of the original creative team, I don’t see this working at all

I think we've seen by now that reboots can work when they have nothing in common with the original. From a creative standpoint I would hate to have to write a Dan Fielding character in this climate. As a mere viewer I know I can skip this reboot like I skipped all the others.

If the character of Dan is still chasing women in his 60s (70s?), there is no creative standpoint. It’s what made the Murphy Brown reboot so bad… none of the characters had grown in the years they’d been off the air. Even the Brady Bunch made Greg a doctor and sent Cindy to college.

The only thing that worked for me about the Murphy Brown reboot was the subplot involving Avery (Jake McDorman) working for the right-wing "Wolf" network, despite/in spite of  being Murphy Brown's son; that storyline wasn't explored enough, as it would have pulled us away from the core characters.

As an aside, since we're talking about Jake McDorman...I still miss "Limitless".

I note that the press release Variety quoted called the new series a spinoff rather than a reboot. So I agree that trying to resurrect the old show with Fielding now in his seventies and pulling the same shtick would be creepy and repellent. And it would be creepy and repellent coming from a new prosecutor character who would be the age Fielding was when Night Court aired.

But Dan Rubin found something to write about in that show's universe and it got enough talent on board to get NBC interested. So maybe they figured out how to move on and make it a new series rather than a reboot.

Hopefully the reboot loses the Moment of Sentiment (or another S word) just before the end of each episode. I hated that when it was originally on. Occasionally, fine, but you could set your watch by it in every episode of the original. It made me appreciate Seinfeld's "no hugging, no learning" rule.
