One of the few scenes I remember from "Good Times," from the 1978-79 season:
Bookman (Brown): "Hey, J.J., you wearin' a new cologne or something?"
J.J. (Jimmie Walker): "Oh, yes, it is, Bookman."
Bookman: "I think it smells fantastic."
J.J.: "Thank you, Bookman. Thank you very much. [Laughs] See there, Ma?"
Florida (Esther Rolle): "J.J.! That's Bookman! A bath in mayonnaise would please him!"
He nearly got what ended up being Demond Wilson's role on "Sanford and Son," except that he was still under contract to "Laugh-In" at the time.
“Sometimes you can do too much of a thing, and it doesn’t come natural,” Brown said in 2019. “With everybody [calling Bookman] ‘buffalo butt’ in a scene, it loses something. … They even had Janet [Jackson], who had just come on the show, answering like Mr. Buffalo Butt."
