I wanted to see what Quibi was so I downloaded the app onto my iPad. I launched it and found I could not see any content without signing up for a subscription. True there was a free trial but I didn't want to share any personal information with them before I figured out if this was something I wanted. So I uninstalled the app. I'm still mildly interested in what might be there but I never get links or recommendations from the people I follow in the media so if they're ignoring it I'll continue to ignore it. I'm guessing other people have similar experiences and that's why Quibi finds itself in that situation.

Some of it was available on YouTube for a while. I was not impressed. 

I think people are hoping that if they produce high volumes of it, cheap, badly made pablum will somehow find a way to go viral. And I suppose it can (looking st you, Cobra Kai), but to make that premise the cornerstone of a media outlet seems ill-advised

To some extent that takes me back to Malcolm Gladwell's The Tipping Point where he took examples of things that went viral and tried to figure out why. There's no set formula for it and no way to force it. And your "cornerstone of a media outlet" reminds me of Crackle and Seinfeld's Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.

Getting established is a crapshoot and a difficult process for any new outlet. I think there is merit in having free, or ad supported, general content and higher value content behind a paywall. Quibi could make pilot episodes free and use them as teasers for subscriptions.

For a while there, nearly all the Mystery Science Theater 3000 guys had various podcasts (Mike Nelson’s sporadic Christian podcast seems to be the last MSTie standing), and occasionally they’d have each other as guests. Some of my favorite moments are when they talked about one of my favorite early websites, Timmy Big Hands, which they all collaborated on. It was a textbook example of the first dot-com bubble burst: Throw money at creative people and pray something connects, then run screaming from it when it does not. 

I still miss “Kill A Guy,” possibly the best online game ever made
