Fox waste of space (aka "Studio Analyst") Alexi Lalas decided to use the term "wanker" to describe his broadcast partner James Corden during yesterday's pregame show, oblivious to the fact that the term is a slur in Britain.

Between this and Fox actually running long during the quarter break... I'm sorry..."hydration pause" in the opening match, missing game action because of it, I'm treasuring my Peacock subscription.

It could very easily draw complaints to our FCC. It may have been years ago, but they could have seen the term as "actionable."     B

I remember when. Phil Collins guest starring in Miami Vice used the same word. I think it passed unchallenged on NBC, but when that episode reached the BBC it was notable. That said Miami vice aired after the watershed at the time. 

In fact, the biggest issue the BBC had was the realism of the gun play in the show.

In the ‘90s I remember seeing Peter Noone as himself in a long forgotten episode of a long forgotten sitcom where he called somebody a wanker and it was clear nobody thought the word objectionable. I looked him up on IMDB and found it was Dave’s World in 1996.

And, of course, Mr Burns said it to U2 in an end-credit scene in
"Trash Of The Titans".

I doubt it would be actionable: just another example of Fox employing
only the best and brightest racists for their broadcasts.

Ah, I hadn’t seen anything about Lalas and his MAGA credentials. I just think of him (positively) as an ex-player who carried the flag for the sport in the post 1994 doldrums. When the sports media stopped paying attention and it looked like the MLS wasn’t long for this world, he was the one pushing to keep it relevant. In the current era where interest and coverage has mushroomed, he’s become a dinosaur. I didn’t understand why FOX would put him on a panel with Thierry Henry and Zlatan Ibrahimovic but it could be to pacify the culture warriors. He doesn’t take anything away from the panel, he just doesn’t add anything and now there are many former players who have become broadcasters and they would be better.

The thing about Lalas calling Corden a full kit wanker isn’t that it’s naughty, it’s that it’s specific. I imagine that FOX Sports signed their ex-player talent and then figured out what the shows were going to be. So they talked to Lalas about being on a late night wrap up show and then decided to give it to Corden who is doing a completely different show and that caused the wanker remark.

I watched about 40 minutes of the Corden show on Friday after the US-Paraguay game and I won’t be watching any more. FOX is the only network that can show filmed highlights and they didn’t have any. I went to YouTube to watch CBS Golazo and Men in Blazers post game wrap ups and they were at least about the games even if they couldn’t show highlights.
